Rehabilitation from an injury = training.
You will often surprise yourself with what you CAN do.

My high school gymnastics coach had one rule at practice; you don’t use the word “CAN’T”. It didn’t matter when or where you used it, if you did 50 laps around the gym. At the time I didn’t truly understand

Of all the coaches and trainers I have had in my life, that one lesson is the one that stuck with me the most. It has been over 30 years since I was in gymnastics. I now find myself teaching that lesson to every one of my students, clients, teammates and friends. Don’t you dare use that word around me! If you do …. Push ups. This word has become the bane of my career as a trainer. Why do I hate it?

There is nothing that you “CAN’T” do, there is nothing you “CAN’T” do and there is nothing you “CAN’T” achieve. You just have to be willing to work for it. You have to be willing to push for it. Most important you have to be willing to believe in yourself. This is one of the biggest problems with people today. We use this word “CAN’T” to much. It is first thing that just pops out of our mouths I ask a client to do something, the first thing they say is what they “CAN’T” do. Worst of all, we are teaching this to our kids. I have children saying they “CAN’T” do something , as they are doing it. I don’t care about what you “CAN’T” do. I care about what you CAN do.

Where does this apply with training? Let us take a look at my form of punishment for using the “CAN’T” word…. “Push ups”. When I tell anyone to do a push up for the first time, I get the same response “I CAN’T do them from my feet!” I’m sorry did I say from the feet? I said push up. We always put that hurdle in front of us. We always look at the most difficult method of doing something and say I “CAN’T”. So why “CAN’T” you? Is it too difficult? You’re right it is! But you CAN still do it. If I had a client that weighs 300lbs and never worked out before, would I put 192lbs on a bar and have them bench press it? “No” then why would you have to do a push up from your feet.

Now I know people just read this and ask why “192” ? That is the weight the client is lifting when they do a push up from their feet.

A study in the Journal of strength and conditioning research found the percentage of body weight used with four variation of push up.

Edden, W. Wirm, et al. Kinetic Analysis of Several Variations of Push ups. Journal of strength and conditioning research. 2011. 25(10), 2891-2894.

1. From feet. 64 percent
2. From knees. 49 percent
3. Hands on 24’ box on knees 41 percent
4. Feet on 24’ box. 75 percent

Training is all about progression. You do what you CAN, until you CAN do more. If a push is to difficult “that you are unable to do it at this time”. Drop to your knees, to your waist, stand up and lean on a counter, a picnic table, a wall. Don’t just say I “CAN’T” and not try something. Modify the exercise so that you CAN. When that starts to get easy, modify it again and again and again. Continue to challenge yourself. If you CAN only do one rep from your feet, do it! Then drop to your knees for the rest of them. Next time try for 2, then 3, then 4. Progression! That is how you CAN do it. How you will do it.

As a trainer, it is my job to help you. You have to believe it first. Believe in yourself and stop using that word! It took me a little while but, I learned that lesson. So to that high school coach and gym teacher I say “thank you Mrs. Hayes, you taught me well” and I will continue to teach that same lesson Passing it on to the next generation.

When it comes to keeping our community healthy and happy, Heather has been a key part of it for quite some time! We have always been comfortable referring our patients to Heather in whatever she does.
If you are looking into additional ways how you can help yourself feel better, yoga is a fantastic way to do it.

So a little shout out to me. I’m not great at promoting myself but I felt strongly that I wanted to share this accomplishment. I have worked in the health and wellness sphere for 30 yrs. Yikes and I fell strongly about training and education. I have been a RMT for 30 years, then I went on to obtain my Fitness trainer certification through Can Fit pro. Health coaching certification through Ontario Fitness council. In 2001 I took my very first 500 hour yoga teacher training Mukti Yoga a very rich training steeped in Eastern Theory. At the same time I completed a Yoga teacher trainer course recognized by Can Fit pro. After my first training I dove into an intensive Yoga therapy training pand Restorative yoga trainings to really help support clients in restoring their bodies and minds. It wasn’t until 2017 that I took my second 500 hour yoga teacher training this training was the art and science of vinyasa yoga lots of beautiful flowing movement. And if this wasn’t enough I then completed a Yin Yoga teacher training, my love of fascia, and the secret sauce to helping people get really quiet and very much ease discomfort in their joints. In 2019 I had the pleasure of travelling to California to train at Unplug, with davidji ( author of destressify) as our lead instructor. This 200 hour meditation certification was an amazing training. The support and ongoing mentorship is unmatched. So since 2017 I have now taught over 2000 hours of classes workshops and retreats. I feel blessed that my students keep coming back and that I have the honour of guiding them. My hope is that after attending a class/ workshop each person leaves with more peace, a sense of ease and mindfulness in their minds and in their bodies.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Ps may we all continue to evolve and be the best version of ourselves.

From our son, Joey Townsend:

Dear Community Members,

I am a grade 12 student at Wellington Heights, and during my time at the high school, I have seen firsthand how limited financial resources negatively impact the future potential of so many bright and talented youth within our community. There are good people with strong minds and so much to contribute to the world, who fall through the cracks, simply because they can’t afford to take that next step in their education. I feel compelled to do all that I can to make a difference in the lives of those who deserve better, so I have taken it upon myself to raise funds to start the Wellington North Legacy Scholarship, in hopes that I can help reduce financial barriers. Reducing financial barriers to post-secondary education for virtuous students demonstrating the desire, determination, and strength of character to make a difference in the world, will put them on a path to reach their potential, as well as break the cycle of poverty. This will not only benefit that individual, but also their family and, ultimately, our entire community.

If you have been listening to our local radio station, 88.7 The River, you may have heard about this scholarship, along with my effort to get as many donations as possible. I believe we are a cohesive community where we all come together to support our own people, so I am hopeful that many of you will have an interest in furthering this endeavor. My goal is to raise $10,000 this year to make post-secondary education more accessible to one (or more) Wellington Heights student graduating in 2023 and continue raising funds each year to continue to make this scholarship available to graduates annually.

I humbly request donations from all who are able to contribute. Every bit helps - I sincerely appreciate any amount you can give.

Donations can be made online at https://www.gofundme.com/f/jcs-legacy-scholarship,
or cheques payable to Joseph Townsend can be dropped off at Mount Forest Chiropractic at 148 Main St. S.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email at gmtintheforest@gmail.com. You may also reach out to WHSS Principal, Brent Bloch, to verify any information I have provided here.

Sincerely,
Joey Townsend
