The first summer they met, Heather Zurel and her husband David Porter started growing food. That was over a decade ago. They now own and operate Vinland Acres Forest Farm , a farm dedicated to improving food security in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Last summer, Agriculture in the Classroom NL and NL Young Farmers focused our cameras on Heather for our Women in Agriculture video series. Just like International Year of the Woman Farmer, this series recognizes and promotes the vital contributions of women in agriculture!
Currently split between a leased plot of land at O'Brien Farm Foundation in St. John’s and 20 acres in Bay Bulls, Vinland Acres Forest Farm enters its fourth year of production in 2026. Heather credits the O’Brien Farm New Found Farmers Program as a vital part of her farm business success. The 5-year program is designed for beginning farmers to learn and obtain skills, experience, and knowledge as they move towards independent farm operations.
Passionate about regenerative agriculture, sustainability, and technology, Heather previously worked in medical research as a data scientist. That experience led her to become the visionary behind Data Farms , a company that integrates data science with agriculture to optimize farming practices. With soil nutrient tests, weather stations, and drone scans for crop health and elevation, Data Farms helps farmers reduce input costs while making sure crops have everything they need to thrive.
“When I’m on the farm, when I’m in my basement planting seeds, when I’m weeding, when I’m harvesting crops, it really makes me realize my place in our world and on the planet,” Heather said. “I’m just a very small piece of the puzzle.”
This video was filmed and edited in collaboration with Christian Davis from Davis Film Inc. A special thank you to the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership and NL Federation of Agriculture for supporting Agriculture in the Classroom NL and NL Young Farmers.
