The Board of Directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA) advises that Cherie Whelan, CEO, has given notice that she has accepted another opportunity, and that her last day with NLCSA will be Friday, February 27, 2026.

Cherie joined the NLCSA as CEO in January 2024 and, in the short time since, has led significant, positive change at the association and for safety in Newfoundland and Labrador’s construction sector. After facilitating the development of a 3-year strategic plan for the NLCSA, Cherie oversaw many meaningful initiatives and improvements, including the implementation of our new SiteSafe Certification program for small construction firms.

On behalf of the NLCSA Board of Directors, I extend a sincere thank-you to Cherie for all the value she has brought to our association. We are sad to see her leave - Cherie's experience, skills, and passion for safety will be greatly missed! We wish her all the best in her new position!

The Board of Directors has activated its succession plan and will search diligently to find the best qualified candidate to succeed Cherie as our next CEO. A recruitment firm, Higher Talent, has been engaged and the CEO position will be advertised in the coming days.

Trina Troke
Chair, NLCSA Board of Directors

💯 Reasons Why NL is Getting Safer!

We are thrilled to announce a major milestone for the NLCSA and the province’s construction industry: We officially have 100 "current" NCSO®s in Newfoundland and Labrador! 🏗️💪

While over 300 professionals have earned their National Construction Safety Officer designation through the NLCSA over the years, maintaining "current" status requires ongoing dedication and active participation in the field. Having 100 active NCSO®s means 100 safety leaders are on the ground right now, ensuring our workers go home safe every single day.

Want to join the ranks of NL’s safety elite? The NCSO® designation is the gold standard for safety coordinators. It proves you have the skills, knowledge, and field experience to manage a world-class safety program.

Meet Warrick Butler 👋

With over 20 years in residential construction, Warrick knows first-hand what small builders and contractors face every day. As Owner of Butler’s Quality Contracting and Past Chair of the NLCSA Board, he brings the voice of residential and small employers to our Board table.

In this short video, Warrick shares why health and safety matters for small companies, how NLCSA staff support members, and why the new Site Safe Certification Program is helping small employers take their first steps toward building a strong safety culture.

Here at the NLCSA we are proud to shine a light on the people making construction safer across our province.
