Mind-Aid Muskoka

Mind-Aid Muskoka Mental health navigation and support for young people in Muskoka. It is not always clear where to start when you are embarking on a journey to mental wellness.

If you, or someone you care about, are struggling mentally, we may be able assist you in getting the help needed. The mental care care system is confusing and hard to navigate and that is why MiND-AID was created. We are here simply to help, and for free. If your first step is reaching out to us, we can help you plan the next ones, that's what we do.

Up for a lil' friendly competition? šŸ˜Ž

Then why not challenge your competitors to match your pledge during the Radiothon for Youth Mental Health, happening this Friday on Hunters Bay Radio!

Hundreds of young people reach out to us every year for mental health supports, and we’re only able to offer our services because of community donations.

Maybe you’re a contractor who puts a call-out to other contracting companies to match your donation of $100.

Or a realtor who challenges other local real estate agencies to see who can raise the most for youth in Muskoka.

Friday is going to be a HUGE day for us because it will impact how much we can support young people in the coming months. Every donation, big and small, will make a difference.

Listen to 88.7FM this Friday to make your pledge, or donate anytime at https://www.mindaidmuskoka.com/donate

Have we ever told you the story of MiND-AID’s first client?

Ray is the first young person we supported with finding mental health services, and his story is a reason why we are doing our Radiothon fundraiser with Hunters Bay Radio this Friday.

ā€œWith support from an old high school teacher, I became MiND-AID’s first client. After much encouragement, I met with Jody, despite my distrust of service workers and lack of any hope. We conversed for 2+ hours in Muskoka chairs on the porch where the teacher provided cookies and comfort until I felt safe with Jody.

I am a survivor of prolonged childhood s**ual abuse and s**ual a***ult, which left me extremely untrusting. MiND-AID met me where I wanted and over time helped me discover my untreated Complex PTSD, severe social anxiety, depression and ADHD. Before that I was so afraid of the systems that wouldn’t accommodate for my needs that I turned to self harm and substance use, later leading to the loss of my job and s*icidal behaviors. I found myself not having secure housing and couch-surfing as well.

When MiND-AID finally swooped in, my life was chaos. I had to start therapy relearning emotions. My mental health needs were not being met along with my physical health needs. I didn’t have a doctor or care for my heart condition, or treatment for my severe gender dysphoria. That all changed and little by little I received the cures I always needed. MiND-AID connected me with countless services while meeting any accommodation I needed.ā€

Over a couple of years of walking alongside Ray every step of the way at his pace, in communication with a coordinated group of providers, we got him connected with a nurse practitioner and doctor, addictions counsellor, social services, financial support, housing info, tax help, ODSP, legal support, peer support workers, a psychologist for assessment, therapists (and funding to cover the cost) for over 40 sessions to treat ADHD and trauma.

Ray is no longer a client of MiND-AID. He is not using substances or self-harming, he is not overwhelmed by depression or suicidal. His diagnoses are being managed, he is securely housed and he has medical support.

He is a board member of MiND-AID now and the chair of MYVoice - our new Youth Advisory Committee. He writes beautifully, is actively discovering his Indigenous heritage, supports his fellow committee members and has many goals for helping to improve care for other young people in Muskoka, as well as a plan to study and work in social services to help others.

And guess what? He’s buying his first house on the day of the Radiothon!

Ray is one of over 2000 young people we have helped since 2020. When we go live on Hunters Bay Radio this Friday, we hope you’ll think of young people like Ray. So much can change for a young person when they have the mental health services and resources they need.

Will you build up youth with us?

We’ve launched a new campaign to raise funds for youth mental health. The fundraising campaign was inspired by a message we received from a young person we supported. With help from one of our system navigators, they were able to find help for their mental health:

ā€œAfter all this time of being helped by MiND-AID, I finally realized what you guys do.

MiND-AID is like a tool box, you can pull so many tools out of this small box and it never seems to run out, the possibilities are endless.

You provide the right equipment to get the job done, and no matter what gets in the way you find a new path and the perfect tool to bypass the problem.

The right tool makes the biggest difference, you can’t put a nail in with a screwdriver.

Thank you for being my handy dandy tool box, I will always need the tools you provided.ā€

Just like any building project, a young person requires the right tools and guidance to be successful in building their own self.

šŸ› ļø On May 1, you can be the reason why a young person gets those tools. In partnership with Hunters Bay Radio, we’re hosting a radiothon for youth mental health. We’re determined to raise $20,000 to help young people access the tools and resources they need for their mental wellness.

Every donation will help, whether it’s a one-time contribution or an ongoing monthly donation to sustain our services.

šŸ“» We hope you’ll tune in to 88.7FM on May 1!

Ok, here’s the BIG news!

On May 1, we’re teaming up with Hunters Bay Radio for our first-ever Radiothon! From 6 am to 6 pm, we’re going live on 88.7FM to fundraise for our work with young people who are struggling with their mental health.

Here’s why: 70% of mental health issues begin in childhood or adolescence, and yet many young people wait months (or even years!) to get the specialized care they need.

It’s because of supports like our Mental Health Navigators, the Mobile Youth Wellness Hub, and our Therapy Fund that young people DO get the help they need. We help 500+ young people and parents/guardians every year, but we don’t receive any long-term funding to sustain this work. We need help, too.

So we’re taking our ask to the airways because we know you, our community, shows up for each other! Here’s what you can do:

šŸ“£ Spread the word about the Radiothon by sharing this post.

šŸ¤™šŸ¼ Call in to Hunters Bay Radio on May 1 to make a donation, or donate online anytime at mindaidmuskoka.com/donate.

⭐ Become a sponsor of our Building Up Muskoka Youth campaign and be featured live during the Radiothon. Call us at 844-646-3243 to find out more.

This is going to be a huge day for us, and it wouldn’t be possible without Hunters Bay Radio. This community radio station has been a long-time supporter of ours, and we are so excited to partner with them on this radiothon for youth mental health.

Some things just go together – like peanut butter and jelly, Buzz and Woody, or MiND-AID and Food4Kids Muskoka.

Recently, Food4Kids Muskoka stocked us up with amazing snacks for the young people we support. From pepperoni sticks to pretzels, milk to Bear Paws, our teens love that they can grab some snacks during our Hub visits!

Food4Kids Muskoka has been a great supporter of ours, ever since we first got the Mobile Hub rolling. We count our lucky stars to have them as a community partner, and appreciate all the work they’re doing to address child hunger in Muskoka.

When you see our posts asking for donations, this is what we really want you to see…

The young people who reach out to us, having tried many other options and not being able to get the specialized support they need.

Our Therapy Fund is literally a lifeline for some of the young people who reach out to us. And our Therapy Fund is low.

This is the difference your donation will make:

ā€œUntil I was connected to Mind-Aid in 2020, me and therapy had a love/hate relationship.

I very strongly disliked the thought of therapy but I craved healing so badly that I would continue to try over and over again. By the time Mind-Aid got to me I was so reluctant to receive therapy because I never found a specialized therapy that helped me heal the trauma baggage I had been caring for years.

Without Mind- Aid providing me trauma therapy I would have never gotten to the place I am today. I couldn't afford to pay for therapy and nor could my parents, leaving me in a sticky situation.

If I stayed on the path I was going without specialized therapy, I'm unsure where I would be today. I know where I wouldn't be though.ā€
