This is a post I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever have to make. We're shutting our website off to US orders, temporarily for now - but maybe forever. We truly hope it's not goodbye and only see you later.
We have done everything right, followed all the new rules put in place, jumped through the hoops & everything in between. But it's just not enough. With the ending of the de minimis on August 29th, Upfront along with thousands of other small Canadian businesses have faced an incredibly harsh reality - trade with the US is almost impossible now. Despite being CUSMA compliant and filling all paperwork that's asked, parcels are still being marked as return to sender before they ever leave Canada. If they do leave Canada, it’s a toss up between them going smoothly or being unjustly charged 500% + tariff fees. The hardest part of it all is that no one really has concrete answers on what to do.
When Trump enacted all of the new tariffs and removed the de minimis, the infrastructure wasn't and still isn't in place to handle that. So we're stuck in limbo. Until the infrastructure is in place, we can't accept US orders because we have no way to guarantee they'll make it to you. Even if it were *as simple* as passing the tariff fee along to our US customers or even Upfront eating that cost, there's literally no where to nor process to collect or pay those tariff fees within the systems in place currently.
We are working tirelessly behind the scenes to find a solution, but we are tired. Small businesses have been thrown 'once in a lifetime' 'never before' hurdle back to back for the past 5+ years. From postal strikes, to 200x increased costs on raw materials, COVID shutdowns - you name it we've all been dealing with it. Pivoting at every step and pivoting again at the next hurdle. But we're all tired, really fu***ng tired.
This is my official plea to support you local small businesses or some of us just simply won't make it. I understand that some folks may not understand why losing a market like the US is a big deal for small businesses, but for some of us it's up to 40% of our revenue. If you're at all involved in the small business community, you know that the big signs of growth and 'success' are new markets like the US. It's highly encouraged as a way to grow and when it's good - it's great. When you're thrown obstacles that have an impossibility to overcome, it's devastating.
As always, we will pivot - just as all small businesses do. In the spirit of lifting up as many local businesses who may be struggling to I'd love for you to tag your favourite local businesses below and show them some love heart 💜
