Nakusp and Area Community Forest

Earlier this week, the NACFOR management team led some Selkirk College forestry students on a field tour in Wensley Creek.

Wensley Creek, a recreation area for cross-country skiing, hiking, and biking, is within the NACFOR tenure. We showed the students our wildfire risk reduction work, and talked about specific management practices to protect values such as wildlife and domestic watersheds in the area.

It was so great to see such a large number of students in the forestry program!

The Arrow Park Trail, managed by NACFOR, will be closed for maintenance starting March 31, 2026.

Maintenance of blowdown and falling dangerous trees will take place. Please avoid the trail sections where crews are working, and obey worksite signage. Work should take a couple of days, and the trail will be open again soon.

Crews will be conducting wildfire risk reduction activities in Woodlot 406 above Alexander Road throughout the Spring. Please be aware of crew activity and obey worksite signage. Burning piles and smoke may be visible from Nakusp. For more information on wildfire risk reduction projects, visit

NACFOR will be conducting pile burning above Alexander Road, within Woodlot License #406, on Saturday February 14th 2026. The piles may be visible from Nakusp.

Community forests operate to sustainably manage their local forest landbase for economic, social, cultural, and environmental values, all while returning benefits to the local community in many different formats.

The Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) is pleased to announce the addition of 3,434 hectares to Community Forest Agreement (CFA) K2S. This amendment increases the total CFA area from 9,192 hectares to 12,626 hectares.

The additional area will help to diversify NACFOR’s landbase and ensure the long-term sustainability of its annual allowable cut of 20,000 cubic metres. The new areas, previously part of Interfor Corporation’s Forest License, include a parcel adjacent to NACFOR’s Wensley Creek operating area and NACFOR’s Woodlot 406, the north face of Box Mountain, and a large area over Allshouse Peak, from the Summit Lake Forest Service Road to Slewiskin Forest Service Road (See attached map).

The Wensley Creek Trails are closed to motorized traffic between December 1 - April 1. Volunteers of the Arrow Lakes Cross Country Ski Club work hard to maintain the trails for skiers. Please respect and stay off the track set trails with vehicles, snowshoes and dogs during their season.

New kiosk signs at both of the Jackrabbit trailheads have been installed.

Thanks to the Arrow Lakes Cross Country Ski Club for all their work up at Wensley Creek, and keeping the track set for skiers!

When using the Jackrabbit trail, please stay off the track set for skiers.
