The following are ONLY a few of the details that the "Health Professional and Occupations Act" affects: This act removes the “self-regulating” philosophy, which has traditionally ¬provided a well-balanced regulatory power over Medical Professionals.
Unlike the current Health Professions structure, and unlike the regulatory framework for other professionals, the board members of the new regulatory framework will be appointed by the government.
• A new “discipline tribunal” and a “superintendent’s office” will be established to control the ¬colleges and their members. The members of both new offices are appointed by the government and are responsible only to the minister.
• Board members for each professional college will be appointed only by the -government.
In addition, this new ¬regulatory framework will have vast ¬powers:
• Powers to search, inspect, seize, and record. “An ¬investigator may … without a court order … enter premises used by a respondent to … inspect and copy any records … containing personal information or … confidential information.”
