Heads up travellers! Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the chikungunya virus, meaning “that which bends up” due to the severe joint pain that can leave people hunched over. Symptoms include fever and intense joint pain that can last months or even years, with higher risk for pregnant individuals, infants, older adults, and those with health conditions. Vaccination against Chikungunya is authorized in Canada for people 18+, recommended for travellers going to areas with outbreaks, and may be considered for long-term stays (around 6+ months) in higher-risk regions even without an active outbreak. If you are planning to travel to areas like Bangladesh, China (Guangdong Province), Cuba, Madagascar, Kenya, Somalia, or Sri Lanka, use insect repellent, cover up, and use mosquito nets. If you feel unwell during or after travel — especially with fever or joint pain — seek medical care and mention your travel history. Rabies is a deadly viral disease affecting over 150 countries, mainly in Asia and Africa. Most human cases—99%—come from dog bites or scratches, and once symptoms appear, rabies is always fatal. The good news is that it’s preventable: if you are bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal, wash the wound immediately, get the rabies vaccine, and receive immunoglobulin if recommended.
