In Canada and the USA the word trainer means very different things! Here in Canada, the word “trainer” is an all encompassing term that just refers to a person who ‘trains’ other people. Typically they will work in a sports or exercise field but it is an unregulated term with little description on the individuals scope of practice
The official trademark of Certified Athletic Therapists are:
CAT(C) - Certified Athletic Therapist
Athletic Therapy
Athletic Therapists
Sport Therapist
Athletic Trainer
However, the profession closest to Athletic Therapists in the USA are “Athletic Trainers”. This can be confusing as they often use the term ‘trainer’ to describe themselves. Athletic Trainers in the USA 🇺🇸 have very similar scope of practices, job settings, and certifications as in Canada 🇨🇦 .
Is your ‘trainer’ a Certified Athletic Therapist?

Baseline assessments are so important, not only for high performance athletes, but all athletes! 🧠

Glad to see it is becoming protocol across the nation and hopefully the trend will trickle down to all non-elite organizations as well! 🙌🏻

A national concussion strategy was unveiled in Calgary on Monday and officials say the guidelines will help protect Canada’s high-performance athletes from sports-related concussions.

Yes they messed up the sign, yes the event coordinator apologized numerous times blaming it on the translation from French 🙃

Getting a chance to get a feel for my childhood obsession of the movie “Bring It On” next weekend as I will be covering Cheer Fest 2019 in Abbotsford 🤸🏼‍♀️
You could say I’m a tad bit excited (I always wanted to try cheerleading but there were no local teams)🤩
You can find me practicing my spirit fingers in my spare time until then 😜 (JK... but maybe not 🙊)

Since it’s Friday, let’s flash back to August⬇️
The Nanaimo Sr B Timbermen hosted the 2018 President’s Cup, and what a week that was. Endless hours at the arena (yes a couple plinth naps were had 😂), daily games including a double header one day. Countless treatments, including having Anika and Jake from come to aid in keeping the boys in tip top shape. There were late nights and early mornings. I worked for other lacrosse teams, which was an eye opener to the different cultures in sport. We had moments of excitement and moments of disappointment. 🥍
Ultimately we came just short of the title, coming second in the gold medal game, but Nanaimo, that game was one to remember. The energy in that filled arena, and the effort the players put into that game, is something we will never forget. 🌟

Hello health and fitness world! It’s been a wee bit of time since I’ve posted on here, or any social media (sorry!), but I’m back! 🤗
For those of you who are new, my name is Dana Lainchbury, and I am a Certified Athletic Therapist. Don’t know what that is? Check out my website for more information! No I am not a “trainer”, a “fitness coach”, or a “medic”... although we can provide some similar services💡
I spent a lot of 2018 focusing on growing specifically as a therapist, and not so much as a business, which I am so happy I did. In fact, I am going to continue that movement throughout 2019, but with the goal of reaching as many of you as possible. Which includes those who may be unable to get in for an appointment at the clinic. ✔️
I will fill you in over the next couple weeks what I got up to for the remainder of 2018 when I was a little MIA 🤓 and also some of the things I’m going to bring to you this upcoming year 💪🏻
I hope everyone is having a great start to their new year, and are ready to crush some goals 👊🏻
