This is a bit of a personal post by Caroline.
The first photo was taken in May of 2024 when I realized something was “off” and my hair was shedding like crazy.
Life gets stressful and we all forget to take care of ourselves sometimes and I was no exception!
I got bloodwork done and my ferritin was at 13 (anything below 50 and we are still capable of hair growth but it accelerates hair shedding, and makes it nearly impossible to grow hair long)
I also felt hella tired but attributed that to working too much.
I switched up my hair routine to include Nioxin 4, nioxin Hairfall Defense Shampoo and nioxin 4 leave in foam and hairfall defense spray.
While many people have heard it’s best to wash hair once a week, if you have hormonal hair loss, an oily or problem scalp (I also have psoriasis) washing more frequently and using topicals on days you don’t have time makes a huge difference!
On wash days I always double shampoo, the first one removes surface grime and the second one really gets your scalp clean. Nioxin conditioner is also meant to be massaged into the scalp much like shampoo, then combed through the lengths and I like to leave on for about 5 minutes. It never makes my hair feel greasy but for those who hesitate to use conditioner you can always start with that as your first step, rinse well and follow with shampoo if that’s what your lengths prefer.
I gently smooth conditioner in with a framar detangling brush and when I was in full shed mode I would fill up like I was grooming a dog, but now I have a tiny pinch of hair come out on wash days.
I got my iron up by taking two supplements that are locally made, Platinum Naturals EasyIron 18mg and their prenatal vitamin (it has 16mg of iron and all the vitamins and minerals good for hair growth) and in 3 months my iron doubled, and last time I checked I was at 41 so hoping I’ll be above 50 next time I check. Don’t waste your money on “hair vitamins” as they often make dubious claims with no evidence to back them up, and cost far more than they should! I also added a premier protein drink to my daily coffee at work and I think it’s helped a lot
