The Halloween season is full of fun… but for many children (and families) all the costumes, lights, knocks at the door, sugar, and activity can be a lot to process.
At Footholds Therapy Centre, we believe that a few simple strategies can help make the season more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. Here are some tips:
✅ Build a preview – Talk about the upcoming trick-or-treating or Halloween event the day before. Use pictures or role-play to help children know what to expect.
✅ Create a safe space – Designate a “quiet corner” at home or event where a child can take a break when the stimulation gets high.
✅ Use scheduled transitions – If there’s a big event (costumes, lots of guests, loud music), give children a “warning countdown” (e.g., “In 10 minutes we’ll go to the front door”) so they’re not surprised by a sudden shift.
✅ Watch the sugar + screen time – High sugar and flashing lights/screens can compound stimulation. Build in breaks, hydrate, and alternate high-energy moments with calmer ones.
✅ After-event check-in – When the fun is done, provide a simple de-brief: what was favourite, what was tricky, what we’ll do next time.
