Winter is a special time for our family with warm traditions around Christmas and New Years that always involve spending time with friends and family. 2020 has been a challenging year for many, my family included, and to heal from our losses we have been sharing how we can come together and strengthen our bonds this season and fend off some of the loneliness. Here is our list! Check it twice!
* Lights, Lights and more lights. My husband created a beautiful light display on our back patio around our fireplace where we can enjoy a warm beverage and some star gazing at night. These lights won't be coming down any time soon. They soften the dark nights and days.
* Our Christmas dinner will be potluck style this year. Yes, even my 8 year old will be cooking up her favourite dish to share, and I will work hard to stay out of her way. I am so looking forward to this, especially seeing my husband in the kitchen, and the adventure of the meal somehow coming together.
*Exploring the coastal mountains, namely Mount Arrowsmith, Mount Washington, Mount Cain and any somewhat accessible peak. We are avid skiers and lovers of snow, so we will need to go higher to fill this passion. Being newish to Vancouver Island, we have a lot to explore and much can be accomplished in a day trip though come to think of it, perhaps an overnight, winter camping experience for the girls is in order.
* Bonfires and Homemade Eggnog...hmmm, I see a lot of this in the immediate future.
*Christmas Movie Marathon...well this has already started but we all have our faves and this is a nice way to cuddle up and stay warm on a rainy December Day
*Virtual Meet ups with our family and friends family for sure. I can't remember a year we haven't been together and we will find a way to connect, reminisce, and share our hopes for 2021.
* Finally, Chores...and lots of them which we will accomplish together each day so that we can rejuvenate from the year of hard work by sharing the load a little differently over the holidays. Having horses, there is never lack of p**p to shovel or fences to mend!
My wish is that we can all find some purpose in these dark winter days, to quell the anxiety, loneliness or despair that may come knocking. Winter is naturally the time to go inward, reflect and rejuvenate however we still need to feel connected to our own life force as well as the energy of those near and far.
In Love and Peace
