CFIB’s members say that Alberta’s administration of the for-profit space cap under the CWELCC program has blindsided childcare businesses who expected to receive grants.

❤️If any parents have the same concern as we providers do, here is an email you are welcome to send out. We providers have sent multiple emails to everyone we can think of and so we spoke together and decided to let the parents, who are the most affected by this, have their say. Just copy and paste. This is entirely optional. There is no pressure to do this either. But higher ups have told us numbers will have the most impact. ❤️

Subject: Urgent Concern – Alberta Child Care Affordability and Access

Dear [MLA’s Name] / Minister [Name],

As a parent in Alberta, I am writing to express my growing concern about the uncertainty and restrictions surrounding the child care affordability grant, especially in relation to the current cap on new spaces and the potential shift toward a non-profit-only model.

These policy changes are already having a real impact on families like mine:
• New child care centres are being prevented from opening, limiting available spaces.
• Many parents face long waitlists and uncertainty about future fees.
• If funding is restricted to only non-profit programs, the result will be fewer choices and less stability for working families.

The child care system in Alberta was already stretched thin. These new barriers will make it even harder for parents — particularly those with infants, toddlers, or children with specialized needs — to find quality, affordable care. Without access to regulated spaces, some families may be forced into unaffordable or unregulated care options.

We need more investment in child care — not less. I urge you to:
• Reconsider the current cap on new affordability grant spaces.
• Ensure future funding models support quality and accessibility in both non-profit and private centres.
• Include parent voices in future child care planning.

This is not just a child care sector issue — it’s a family issue. And I hope you will use your position to protect the interests of Alberta’s children and working parents.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

At least the federal government has admitted that they were slacking. They’ve frozen applications now but for all of us who have invested everything already, we are on our own to swallow our costs. Even though we weren’t at fault. Seems fair. 🤔

❤️Well, I’ve had two interviews. One with a reporter and one radio one. I’ve submitted many emails to many higher ups. And I’ve weighed every option I can think of. It looks as though, even with all the fight we put in, that the government isn’t going to be in our favour.

That being said, I have two options right now:
1. Continue the process and open Little Ropers Learning at $950/child until or if we gain the affordability funding for parents again
Or
2. Accept that I’ve tried as hard as I can and let Little Ropers Learning have a nap

Even though there are only two options, this is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. Even today, after a whirlwind of emotions and questions, I am so lost as to what is the best option.

After today I’m hoping to have more clarity. But for now, I want to thank all of you! You’ve all been an amazing support with encouragement, donations of toys and supplies, and with your excitement to put your child into my learning centre.

Through all this, know your child(ren) were and are loved by Little Ropers Learning. Each child deserves the very best care and even before meeting some of you, I already had big plans for your little.

Thank you again, from my whole heart. You’ve made this experience a wonderful one and I couldn’t have done it without you all.

As glum as this looks for the future of Little Ropers Learning, I want you all to know that I am fighting! Fighting for the right families have, for the right of hundreds of operators who have gotten the same news and so much more. I’ve been in touch with many sectors including TV stations, reporters, the premier, etc. Let’s hope the voice of the people is loud enough. ❤️ Also, here are some pictures of the inside of my centre. Looking at them makes me smile and fills my heart with what it could’ve been.
