When every argument makes you want to break up, it’s not always about the relationship. It’s your nervous system responding to old wounds. If you grew up with inconsistent or unavailable caregivers, your brain learned to expect disappointment, rejection, or abandonment.

You may crave instant comfort, rapid reassurance, or perfect responses. When those expectations aren’t met, the disappointment can feel overwhelming. People with secure attachment can stay and work through conflict — but when you’ve been hurt before, leaving or numbing feels safer.

Recognizing this pattern is the first step toward understanding yourself, your triggers, and building internal safety instead of running from discomfort.
