Due to heavy snow accumulation and rising temperatures, Nelson Police Department is advising against non-essential driving.

As always during significant snow events, stick to low angled streets and priority plowed and sanded bus routes.

If you live on a steep street, it is recommended that you seek a low angle parking spot nearby and walk the final distance to your home.

SUPPLY CHAIN UPDATE

The highway closures in Southwestern BC, due to extreme flooding, have caused some concern that there may be a disruption to our grocery and fuel supply chain in Nelson.

Nelson Emergency Management reached out to our local grocery stores and gas stations for an update and were told that there should not be a significant compromise in food or fuel deliveries in our region as most of our deliveries come from other parts of BC or Alberta.

All of our local stores have seen an increase in customers and have empty shelves due to panic buying. The greater risk of shortages could occur if people are purchasing more than they need for the next few days.

We encourage residents to shop as you normally would and refrain from stockpiling groceries.

We all need to do our part to help each other manage this situation by not creating shortages in our stores.

FULL FIRE BAN IN EFFECT:
Campfires are prohibited throughout B.C. as of Wednesday, June 30, the province said Monday. A ban on Category 2 and Category 3 open fires was already in place.

The ban will stay in effect until Oct. 15 at noon or until the order is rescinded.

The ban comes after B.C. saw record high temperatures this week and a spring that saw less precipitation than normal.

A campfire is defined as any fire smaller than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.

In addition to campfires, Category 2, and Category 3 open fires, the following activities are also prohibited:

-The use of fireworks
-The use of sky lanterns
-The use of burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
-The use of binary exploding targets
-The use of tiki and similar kinds of torches
-The use of chimineas
-The use of outdoor stoves or other portable campfire apparatus without a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriter Laboratories of Canada (ULC) rating
-The use of air curtain burners in Cariboo, Coastal, Northwest, Prince George and Southeast fire centres

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

UPDATE: The moccasins have been returned to the museum and will be given back to their owner. It was all a misunderstanding.

This wee pair of moccasins has gone missing from the stairs, where they were left for the memorial happening tomorrow at 2:15 at City Hall. They have sentimental value, and we are reaching out to the community to help track them down and return them to their owner.

They went missing sometime around 1 pm this afternoon. If you have them, please return them to the Museum steps - no questions asked.

Please share.
