As women, many of us have a deep relationship with sadness and less so with healthy aggression and empowered anger. Anger can feel scary, partly because anger is not an emotion that has been well-received by society when it is expressed by women. But also because it can make us feel powerful, and many of us are terrified of our own power, for a host of reasons, cultural and otherwise.

And yet, our anger, our power can help remind us of our strength, and can be important to orient to when we feel our sadness overtaking us to the point that we forget who we are.

So, to those who need to hear this today, let this be a reminder that you are, and always have been, a badass bitch ❤️

We are back for our third year of our therapeutic somatic ski day for self-identified women and gender q***r folks: Embodied in the Backcountry! Join me (Registered social worker/Somatic Experiencing® and nature-based therapist) and Jasmin Caton (ACMG Ski Guide and all-around amazing human) for a day of ski touring focused on tracking and regulating our nervous systems, skiing (hopefully) great snow, and connecting to our mountain environment.

While we expect to get as much great skiing in as our bodies and conditions allow for, this day is not about charging and pushing our bodies hard, but instead skiing in a way that feels regulating and fun in a supportive, encouraging, and compassionate space.

*Please contact me to discuss options to have this program covered by your insurance provider

This is a three-part series:
January 23rd, 5:30-7:45 pm: An in-person gathering where we will begin to build connections with one another, ask any questions you have about our ski day, and to begin to learn about our nervous systems. There will be optional space to share about any specific fears or challenges that arise for you in the backcountry. We will also practice various nervous system regulation strategies that we will use on our ski day. You will receive some take-home handouts with the knowledge and tools/skills that we cover so that you can practice before our ski day. Location TBD.
February 20th, 4:00pm-6:00 pm: An in-person gathering where we will have the chance to check in and ask any last-minute questions, and go over our avalanche safety briefing with our guide the night before our ski day so that we can get a full day of skiing in (with lots of breaks, of course!)
February 21st, 8:00 am-5:00 pm: The grand finale: our ski day! This is the day where we will practice the skills we learned, have a chance to check in about any challenges you’re experiencing to feel regulated on the mountain, and have a whole lot of fun on our skis! We will also engage in some nature-based therapy practices to deepen our connection to the mountains. Location TBD but likely either Whitewater resort or Kootenay Pass. If we choose to ski at Whitewater, you must purchase a one ride pass if you don’t have a season’s pass)
Our hope is that you will ski/walk away with a deeper sense of connection, knowledge about your nervous system, practices that can support you in regulating your nervous system in the backcountry and life, a new friend or several, and a lighter heart and clearer mind.

5% of the profits will be donated to COINS (Circle of Indigenous Nations) in our efforts to move towards reconciliation with the original and ongoing stewards of the lands where we ski.

Participants: Maximum 8 participants
Cost: $295 per person (includes ACMG-guided backcountry ski experience co-facilitated by registered social worker.

Please note: You must have your own avalanche gear and be an intermediate skier in the backcountry with good fitness ability, since we will be ski touring for much of the day.

*Optional 1:1 somatic therapy sessions can be booked prior to our ski day for an additional fee to deepen your experience

I’m here to talk a bit about fractals. What are fractals you ask? Fractals are repeating patterns found in the natural world. And the cool thing is, that noticing them can actually help reduce stress, ESPECIALLY for us highly sensitive folk who find chaos particularly overwhelming.

I went on a little solo road trip this weekend and was noticing allll the fractals. These repeating patterns, of course, are ever-present in nature but with the brightness of colour all around it’s hard to NOT see them. My nervous system took a breath of relief.

On those days that you’re feeling especially sensitive or dysregulated or overwhelmed or just OFF, try noticing some of these repeating patterns, these fractals in your environment, track your inner experience and see what happens. I’d love to hear how it goes for you!

If you are a highly sensitive person looking for some support with navigating this special trait, I am here for you and have more tips and tools to share. Feel free to DM or click link to book in bio.

I was sitting in the forest yesterday morning as I typed this, on the last official day of summer, peering around, noticing changing colours, crispier leaves, coolness on my feet.

Often, we humans subscribe to the belief that we are meant to feel the same and be the same all the time. This is capitalism's wish for us, to encourage consistent productivity.

Yet, we are inextricably part of the natural world, which is ever-changing, with Autumn being one of the most iconic representations of this. Nature begins to slow down and turns more inward this time of year and I am here to tell you that it's okay if you're feeling more tired, more slow, more tender than at the height of summer.

When you notice a voice inside that expects you to show up with the same energy, the same mood, the same temperament, I invite you to remember the ever-changing-ness that defines nature. The natural world isn't meant to stay the same; thus, neither are we. Allow the ebbs and flows, they are human. 💕

Hi Nelson!
I am a Registered Social Worker offering in-office, virtual, and nature-based counselling. I’m currently welcoming new clients this fall at my established practice in Nelson 😊

I work from a relational/attachment lens and offer Somatic Experiencing, IFS/Parts Work, and nature-based therapy to support you with emotional regulation (anxiety, depression, anger, etc.), processing shock and relational trauma and grief, and navigating high sensitivity, PMS/PMDD, and eating disorders/body image concerns. These approaches can be helpful if you have tried talk therapy and found it didn’t lead to lasting change or address the root of your experience. They are designed to support you in cultivating lasting relief, integration, and resilience in your nervous system.

Together, we will co-create a safe enough, compassionate space where all of you is welcome. I am grounded, gentle and warm in my approach and as a Registered Social Worker, my services are covered by most benefits plans.

If my approach resonates and you feel you might benefit from some support this fall, I would be delighted to connect over a free 20-minute consultation so you can sense if we would be a good match. In this fast-moving world, who has time to slow down and peer into the intricacies of a mossy micro ecosystem, to pause and feel the kiss of a breeze on our skin, or to sense how nature may guide us in navigating a current challenge in our lives.

Certainly, this was a common sentiment among those of us who participated in a nature-based therapy training a couple of weeks ago. And…we all changed our tune by the end, recognizing the power in our healing journeys of doing so.

Nature-based therapy invites Mother Nature to be a "co-therapist", and having personally experienced the power and richness of this, I can attest to the magic of this process. While indoor spaces can offer a sense of containment and safety in therapy, which is sometimes needed, having sessions in the forest or by the water and relating to nature as our mentor, resource, and guide can offer space for profound insights and deep healing.

I am excited to be offering regular nature-based therapy sessions in the Nelson area! Within these sessions, I combine nature-based therapy, Somatic Experiencing, parts work/Internal Family Systems, psychoeducation about our nervous systems, and a space to be seen, felt and heard. One of my teachers recently told me, “Water what you want to grow.”

In trauma work, we Somatic Experiencing-oriented therapists will often invite you to notice resource—>something fhat helps your system feel more settled, lighter or just generally better. For some, this can feel like a relief and for others this can feel REALLY annoying when our systems are draggingggg us to the more uncomfortable stuff. When we have experienced trauma, our entire or portions of our physiology may be swimming in the “trauma vortex”—> thoughts, behaviours, images, memories, and/or sensations linked to trauma and it can feel unnatural and sometimes very uncomfortable to notice something different, let alone stay there!

It’s not that we DON’T want to go there, in fact, it is often necessary to heal trauma. And…if we don’t have a place that feels rooted enough to hold the discomfort or to come back to when we do go there, we may feel overwhelmed or even become re-traumatized. So, when we ask you to find and notice and maybe even stay with your resource we’re not doing this to ask you to bypass your feelings. We’re supporting your system to develop a new pathway, one that ISN’T trauma physiology, one we call the “counter vortex”. And this new pathway can help us build the capacity and resilience to enter the trauma vortex with a felt sense of safety and without getting stuck there. This is one way that we heal trauma.

SO…when my teacher said water what you want to grow, what she meant was “water” your resource pathway. Orient to pleasure. Notice and do what feels good in your system. Not only can this build the foundation to help us heal trauma but strengthening this pathway ultimately means we get to hang out here more often, which can feel pretty darn good!

I have come to realize the importance of protecting my sensitivity. She is not separate from me, nor I from her. She infuses how I show up in this world and crystallizes my gifts. As long as my physical body exists on this planet, she has no choice but to be because I am her embodied. She sometimes wears a mask in this unforgiving world and yet, she persists. She is tough and soft. Inward and outward...and the space between. And she needs my protection. I speak up for her needs and hold her.

Please care for and protect all of who you are. You are a gift exactly as you are.
