🥶Frostbites can happen quickly and most often impact toes, feet, fingers, hands, ears, and nose.

👇If you see these signs:

1️⃣If possible, remove anything restricting blood flow (boots, gloves, jewelry). Thaw the area only if you are sure it will not freeze again.

2️⃣ Warm the area gradually using warm (not hot) water or body heat. If the frozen area has thawed, don’t break any blisters. Protect them with loose, dry dressings.

3️⃣ If possible, elevate any thawed extremities above the level of the heart.

4️⃣ Rehydrate the person by providing plenty of fluids and encourage the person to seek medical attention.

Whether you love hiking, skiing, skating, tubing, or any other winter activities, make sure these essentials are in your bag. ⬇️

*Other helpful items to consider adding:
🧴Sun protection - yes, sunburns can happen in winter!
💡A small repair kit - for skis, snowshoes, and other gear.
🗺A compass or map – or download the map onto your smartphone (in case of no service)
⛺Emergency shelter (sleeping bag or bivouac) - especially for longer excursions
🧥Wear an insulated jacket

Remember to share your trip plan, including travel arrangements, expected time of return, locations, and contact information for who is with you. Winter weather can change fast - it’s always better to be prepared.
