It’s always fun when we get to help people return to activities they’re passionate about! We recently made a recreational prosthesis for someone we work with to help him get back to skiing. We made the corset (knee brace) removable so he can easily convert his new prosthesis to a water activity prosthesis and soak in the hot tub for the full ‘apres’ experience!
A thigh corset (similar to a knee brace) is a necessary addition to a transtibial ski prosthesis. It allows axial rotational forces applied to the prosthesis to be transferred to the thigh, rather than to the amputee’s residual limb. It also helps the person to ‘drive’ the ski. We added a removable hard foam ‘boot filler’ that better connects the boot and shank of the prosthesis.
