This week, Southlake welcomed local Grade 9 students for Take Our Kids to Work Day!

Students had the chance to learn from teams across the hospital, including Patient and Family Relations, Wellness, Trauma, and Infection Prevention and Control.

They also took part in a smudging ceremony, toured Pharmacy and Food Services, practiced CPR in a simulation session, and explored an ambulance with our partners from York Region Paramedic Services.

A big thank you to our People, Culture, and Experience team for organizing such an inspiring and memorable day.

It’s Patient Blood Management (PBM) Awareness Week, a time to raise awareness about how optimizing a patient’s own blood before surgery can lead to safer care and faster recovery.

Sheila McCarthy, RN, plays a key role in this work through Southlake’s Blood Conservation Clinic. Sheila works with patients having complex procedures to help strengthen their blood health before surgery by increasing haemoglobin levels (Hgb), often avoiding the need for a blood transfusion. Through tailored assessments, she recommends ways to increase iron and protein intake, arranges IV iron infusions, and more.

“PBM is proactive instead of reactive,” says Sheila. “It gives patients time to build strength before surgery, which is what’s best for their physical and emotional well-being.”

By supporting patients in this way, Sheila and the team also help conserve donated blood — a limited, lifesaving resource that depends on voluntary donors.

Sheila is part of OntraC, Ontario’s Provincial Blood Management Program, which works to enhance transfusion practices and promote alternatives to donor blood in surgical patients.

Thank you, Sheila, for your dedication to optimizing care and helping patients feel stronger, safer, and more confident before surgery.
