Introducing ‘Little Talkers’-our new parent and tot language group!

Who: Toddlers aged 12-24 months and one of their caregivers

What: Learn play-based strategies to support your toddler’s speech and language development! Sessions will be led by SLP Alex Cross and supported by Family Speech Clinic volunteers. Alex has a special interest in early language development and loves providing families with evidence-based strategies that are easy to incorporate into busy lives at home. She is a mom of four, and her two-year-old twins will join the fun during some Little Talkers sessions!

Where: Family Speech Clinic, 16945 Leslie St. Unit 4, Newmarket

When: Wednesday November 26th from 10-10:45am
**We are running this one-time pilot session before starting our 4-week program in January**

This past weekend SLPs Alex, Esther and Juliana participated in a PROMPT course held at FSC!

PROMPT is a speech therapy technique for motor speech disorders that stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. It uses tactile (touch) cues to guide the face, jaw, lips, and tongue to help individuals produce speech sounds, words, and sentences correctly.

This 2-day introductory course focused on the motor speech system and included an evidenced-based framework for identifying motor breakdowns and determining therapy targets.

October is AAC Awareness Month! This month we celebrate all the ways people can communicate and focus on ensuring that everyone has a way to be heard and connect with others. Augmentative and alternative communication describes various tools and strategies that can help people who are unable to rely on verbal speech alone. AAC tools can be unaided (e.g., signing, gestures, body language, facial expressions, partner strategies, etc.) and aided (e.g., communication books, speech-generating devices, tablets, etc.). AAC provides an individual independence to express wants, needs and ideas!

To our wonderful clients,

Thank you so much for your support and understanding. Today we had an electrical fire in our rooftop aircon/heating unit. The Clinic filled with smoke but we cleared the building super fast and there were no injuries. Shout out to our AMAZING York Fire, Police and Ambulance Services! They arrived quickly and took care of everything!! I cannot say enough; they were fantastic! Spring, my insurance advisor at the Co-operators (across the parking lot) was also so supportive in this very stressful time! I am the owner of the unit and was able to get what needs to be done - done fast.  With the help of our amazing commercial cleaning team led by Ricky, we will be ready to open for business tomorrow morning at 8:00am.
I have to say that the world is a strange place lately but when a crisis like this happens in your own space, and you experience the support from everyone around you, it feels wonderful and restores my faith in humanity! Thank you everyone!
