WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person's airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, causing them to temporarily stop breathing. This can occur several times per night and can last for 10 seconds or more each time. The repeated episodes of stopped breathing and reduced oxygen levels can result in a number of serious health problems, including:

1. Chronic fatigue and sleepiness during the day
2. Decreased mental alertness and concentration
3. Increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke
4. Increased risk of accidents and injuries due to drowsy driving and decreased reaction times
5. Increased risk of depression and anxiety

OSA is caused by a variety of factors, including obesity, neck size, genetics, alcohol and drug use, and the natural aging process. Symptoms of OSA can include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth or throat, and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Diagnosis of OSA typically involves a sleep study, which can be performed in a sleep center or at home using a portable monitoring device.

Treatment options for OSA can include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol and sleeping on your side, as well as the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, which deliver air pressure through a mask to help keep the airway open during sleep. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove excess tissue from the airway.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy has several benefits for people with sleep apnea, including:

• Improved sleep quality: CPAP helps keep airways open, reducing apneic episodes and allowing for more restful sleep.
• Better overall health: CPAP can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure associated with sleep apnea.
• Increased energy levels: With better sleep, CPAP users often report increased energy levels and improved ability to perform daily tasks.
• Reduced snoring: CPAP can help reduce snoring and other sleep-related noises.
• Improved mental health: CPAP therapy can also lead to improved mood, reduced stress and anxiety, and better cognitive function.

Does your mask cause discomfort? Chances are it’s adjusted too tightly, and the pressure is causing the pain! If the mask is less than a month old, simply loosen it and the problem should solve itself. However if the mask is more than a month old it is either time to change the cushion or the mask.

A CPAP mask should never cause pain! Call us so we can help. 905-246-9590.
