The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) developed the 2000 cal/day recommendation based on a survey of self-reported calorie intake (accurate?). Obviously, individual needs will vary depending on size, gender, age, and activity level (the FDA does say this). There are many apps and online calculators available to help estimate your individual needs. Your body will also tell you. Gaining weight? Eat less. Losing weight? Eat more. Maintaining weight? What you are eating will keep you there.
