To most people, yesterday, February 2, 2026 was simply Groundhog Day. To the work family at Morse & Son Funeral Home - Morgan Funeral Home it was a very special day as Morse & Son's 200th Anniversary.
Founder Austin Morse was born in Nobleton, NY on January 6, 1800. His family moved shortly thereafter to Detroit, in what was then Michigan Territory. In 1821 he relocated to Niagara County and settled in the then unnamed community developing at the junction of Portage Road and Lundy's Lane. This village boasted a thriving population of 130 and was officially name Drummondville in 1831.
Records indicate that Austin purchased a lot and an additional acre of property on the west side of Main Street on January 8, 1826. There he set up his home and a furniture store. This land was to be owned and maintained by four generations of the Morse family. A cabinetmaker by trade, coffin making was a natural extension of the cabinetmaker's place in the community.
It has been said that, "The 19th Century funeral director required only a fine pair of black horses and a black suit to adequately serve the needs of the community." On February 2, 1826, equipped accordingly, Austin Morse was officially in business and the legacy of Morse & Son was initiated.
Through 3 succeeding generations, Morse & Son has continually adapted to the changing funeral needs of the community.
On July 1, 1971, the stewardship of the Morse & Son Funeral Home continued to be the story of a family and a family business with the purchase of the funeral home by Gordon & Betty Morgan. The Morgan legacy has continued to adapt and change through three generations of the Morgan family making it Canada's oldest, or as we like to say, Canada's First Funeral Home. First in Service, first in Value and first in Family.
Morse & Son, the only Canadian family locally owned, full service funeral facility in Niagara Falls.
