This week at Fairview Cemetery here in Niagara Falls, we came together to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of our veterans and active military members during the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony. Standing together in the cold, with snow on the ground and poppies close to our hearts, we were reminded that the hardships we felt today do not compare to the immense challenges faced by those who served so we could live in peace and freedom.
This week also marked the unveiling of two important new memorials.
The Afghanistan Monument recognizes the brave men and women who served in missions from 2001 to 2014, offering hope, stability, and security to the people of Afghanistan.
The Peacekeeping Monument honours all Canadians who have served with the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in peacekeeping and peace enforcement efforts since 1917. Their dedication and commitment to protecting freedom and human dignity will forever inspire us.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the 26 cadets who kept vigil beside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier overnight from November 10 into Remembrance Day, continuing a tradition begun in 1999 where youth stand watch in silent reflection to honor Canada’s fallen heroes. We are also grateful to the Scouts who volunteered at Fairview Cemetery, clearing leaves and placing Canadian flags to pay tribute to our veterans.
We are truly thankful to everyone who joined us in remembrance.
Lest we forget.
