Did you know that our physiotherapist Geneviève is also trained in the Mackenzie Method?

The McKenzie method, also known as mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT) is a system of evaluation and treatment for musculoskeletal disorders of the spine and the extremities.

This approach emphasizes patient empowerment and self-treatment, reducing dependency on passive, hands-on and medical interventions.

A few key features of the Mackenzie Method:

- Active patient involvement: patients can treat themselves when guided appropriately; using specific movements and exercises to manage their pain often reduces the need for prolonged passive treatments (heat,ice, modalities)

- Directional preference: the assessment attempts to find a repetitive movement or a sustained position (i.e. bending backward or forward) that relieves, eliminates or centralizes pain and improves the range of motion

- Centralization: phenomenon during which the pain moves from the extremities (i.e. arms/legs) towards the middle of the spine; this shows a good prognosis and confirms a directional

Meet Emily!
Emily is originally from Timmins and will be working with us at Symetrics until April. She is currently enrolled in the PTA/OTA program at Canadore College but also has a Bachelors Degree in Physical and Health Education from Nipissing University.

Her future goal is to attend Teacher’s College.

In her spare time she can be found at the gym and lifting weights
