Researchers from The Children's Hospital Westmead in Sydney, Australia released a study that confirmed not only how infants die from sudden infant death syndrome, but why.

Skipping breakfast (nearly 25% of Americans do!) can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease. It can also disrupt circadian rhythms.
A 2021 study looked at breakfast eating in pregnancy & the incidence of gestational diabetes (GD). They found that skipping breakfast 4 or more days per week before and during early pregnancy was associated w/ an increased risk of GD.
Not only can skipping breakfast affect your blood sugar regulation, but it may also impact your nutrient intake. In another study, pregnant women in the 2nd tri who skipped breakfast 2 or more times/wk had significantly lower intakes of protein and lower levels of EPA & DHA (crucial omega-3 fatty acids for babyโ€™s brain development) and ฮฒ-carotene (an antioxidant) compared to non-skippers.
While food may be the last thing on your mind if youโ€™re in the thick of the first trimester and experiencing nausea or other symptoms, even a small snack is better than nothing (and may actually reduce your symptoms!).
Whether food in the morning is unappealing to you right now or youโ€™re just a habitual breakfast skipper, try eating a meal or small snack within 30 min of waking (it doesnโ€™t have to be breakfast foods!) and see how you feel. Keeping a snack at your bedside and moving slowly first thing in the morning may also help with nausea.
For more tips on managing nausea in the first trimester and/or to get breakfast ideas, see ch 5 & 7 of . Also check out my article for linked in comments below (along with sources).
I know there may be some intermittent fasters who disagree with this post. For my thoughts on IF and pregnancy specifically, I link to my article on that topic as well. (Or search my site for "fasting" )

Where are the birth books
that talk about this work
That tell you about how you will likely spiral out
And melt down
In those final days (or weeks!)
Waiting
Wondering
Floating between worlds
Out of your mind
Unbearable in your body

This heavy, sacred work.
One moment- trusting. Breathing. Making soup for the freezer.
And then the next- screaming into the bathroom mirror
Sobbing into your hand towels
Convinced youโ€™ll be pregnant forever
Convinced you canโ€™t stand one more minute
Not knowing

Feeling so beyond ready.
And then wondering
Will I ever be ready?!!

This is the work
One moment- affirmations. Walks around the neighborhood. Red raspberry tea by the gallon.
And then the next- cursing the calendar, the mailman, your partner and his mother and your mother and every human who has ever given birth before you

This is the work
Double checking your due date app 8 times before breakfast and begging your body for any sign that labor is close
And then collapsing on the couch, hoping you never give birth because you canโ€™t even find the energy to sweep the kitchen

There are no answers here.
Thereโ€™s no timeline or schedule that makes sense
Time is swirling and murky
Breaking us open
Tearing apart the illusion of control we cling to so tightly
This is the work of birth
And without realizing it, you are already doing it.
Youโ€™re already in it- deep and real. And so close.

Was your labor termed "failure to progress"?

ACOG says that a person is not considered to be in active labor until six centimeters and cannot be termed as โ€œfailure to progressโ€ until she:
- is at least six centimeters dilated
- her waters have ruptured
- and no cervical change has been made in six hours of labor.

Cervical change includes:
- The cervix moves from posterior to an anterior position
- The cervix ripens and softens
- The cervix effaces
- The cervix dilates

Was your labor a true failure to progress?
