| Conclusion and Future Directions
Over 50 years ago, Murray Bowen became interested in the
ways in which families can be both a resource and a challenge
in adapting to the stresses of life. His theory defined how interconnected and intensely dependent emotional systems can be with members learning to relate in reaction to others, and observed the effect that one member can have on the functioning of the system if they work on their own differentiation of self, to think and act for themselves and stay connected in their relationships (Bowen 1978).
The Parent Hope Project is an example of a family systems–informed approach to helping parents work on their own differentiation. Parents are given the opportunity to observe themselves in their relationship interactions and to define more thoughtfully what they would like to do differently. Parent Hope Project
