Ever wondered what a bulk shipping terminal actually does?

Bulk terminals handle commodities transported in large quantities without packaging or containers, meaning materials are loaded directly into the holds of ships rather than into containers.

At Neptune Terminals, Canadian potash and steelmaking coal arrive by rail and move through a coordinated loading process designed to support safe and efficient operations.

As one of North America’s largest multi-product terminals, we have the capacity to handle over 30 million tonnes each year, linking mines to global markets to ensure Canadian resources move reliably and contribute to the local, regional, and national economies.

Bulk shipping may happen behind the scenes, but it plays a critical role in how Canadian commodities reach the world.

Pink Shirt Day is a reminder of the importance of kindness, respect, inclusion, and looking out for one another in our workplaces and communities.

Today, our team joined others across Canada in wearing pink to take a stand against bullying and support safe and respectful environments where everyone feels valued.

Being located on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet in the Port of Vancouver means operating within a working harbour that connects Canadian resources to global markets. Every day, ships, rail, and people move through this space — supporting national supply chains while being part of the North Shore community and the surrounding natural ecosystem.

A view of the working harbour where Canadian commodities are connected to markets all over the world.

Reducing underwater noise is one of the ways the marine industry is working to help protect at-risk whale populations.

We're excited to share this update from the Port of Vancouver’s ECHO Program, which this year is trialing a voluntary slowdown in March in Haro Strait and Boundary Pass. Research shows that southern resident killer whales are historically present in this area during the spring, with peak presence in March, and the goal is to help reduce underwater noise from commercial shipping during this important period.

As part of the trial, ships are encouraged to slow down while transiting through the area:

• 14.5 knots or less for vehicle carriers, cruise, and container ships
• 11 knots for bulk carriers, tankers, and government vessels

Neptune Terminals has supported ECHO initiatives in previous years, with ships departing from our terminal exceeding the industry average for participation. Efforts like these demonstrate how collaboration across the industry can help advance practices that support marine ecosystems while maintaining safe and efficient operations within a working harbour.

Be a Challenger Baseball Buddy and make a difference in the North Shore community.

As a supporter of Challenger Baseball, we’re glad to share this opportunity from Highlands Baseball’s North Shore Challenger division, which is currently seeking volunteer buddies for the 2026 season.

Buddies support participants during game days, helping create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming experience for all players. Beyond the opportunity to participate in team sport, the program also creates meaningful connections and a special bond between players and their buddies.

The 2026 season runs from Saturday, April 11 to Saturday, June 27, with games played each Saturday from 9:45 a.m. to approximately 11:15–11:30 a.m. at Norgate Park in North Vancouver.

For more information, see the link in the comments.

Electric tugboats play an active role in vessel movements at Neptune Terminals, following their entry into service in 2024 through our partnership with Elk Valley Resources and SAAM Towage Canada Inc.

By operating with zero direct emissions and significantly reducing underwater noise, they help protect marine life in the harbour while supporting safe and reliable port operations.

On Canada’s Agriculture Day, we recognize the people, partnerships, and systems, from local gardens to global supply chains, that sustain agriculture and the communities it supports.

This day is also an opportunity to recognize the vital work happening closer to home. One example of this work is the Edible Garden Project at the North Shore Neighbourhood House, a community initiative Neptune Terminals supports and partners with.

Each year, the project grows more than 10,000 pounds of produce through its Urban Farms for the North Shore community, along with an additional 5,000 pounds through its Sharing Gardens. This produce is shared with local social service organizations, including food banks and community programs, helping ensure fresh, locally grown food reaches those who need it most.

At Neptune Terminals, safe operations are our top priority.

We work in partnership with our ILWU forepersons and longshore workers to create a workplace where health and safety come first, and where everyone on site looks out for one another. Keeping people safe — our team, partners, and visitors — is part of how we operate every day.

Through our partnership with veritree, Neptune Terminals is proud to take part in actions that strengthen marine ecosystems.

In collaboration with Coastal Kelp and the Sechelt First Nation, this initiative supports the Northern Salish Sea Kelp Restoration Project, using nature-based solutions to restore kelp forests.

Together, this work supports biodiversity, strengthens coastal resilience, and contributes to healthier ecosystems over the long term, making a real difference for the environments and communities these projects support.

Did you know that steel, and the steelmaking coal involved in its production, are used in many everyday items from cellphones and bicycles to kitchen appliances, and bridges and buildings?

Steelmaking coal, also known as metallurgical or coking coal, is different from the thermal coal used to generate electricity. It is used in the production of steel, a material we rely on every day and one that also plays a key role in renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines and solar panels.

At Neptune Terminals, all the coal we handle is steelmaking coal from Canadian mines in British Columbia. To reduce impacts on the surrounding community and environment, we use water-based dust control systems while also working to conserve and recycle water.
