We're Celebrating səlilwətaɬ Resilience During Earth Week!

Today, April 22, is Earth Day, and this year's theme is Our Power, Our Planet. səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) is celebrating with a week of events highlighting səlilwətaɬ initiatives, including food sovereignty, reducing greenhouse gases, and building community preparedness and resiliency to climate change. These actions respect TWN Indigenous knowledge, stewardship obligations, community strengths, and values. We are dedicated to rebuilding our environment so future generations can thrive, guided by the teachings of our Ancestors.

səlilwətaɬ artist team Chris Overes and his daughter Tamia Overes designed the Coast Salish-inspired HSBC SVNS Vancouver medals for this year's rugby tournament.

The gold medals feature a carving-based design centred on an eagle, which represents strength, leadership, vision, and protection. The composition is based on an original hand-carved eagle created by Chris.

Today, our Tsleil-Waututh community embraces Pink Shirt Day. Kindness is important every day. This year, our community gathered as a family to share a meal, connect, and lift up one another.

We are proud of young səlilwətaɬ artist, Kadence Lánahmats George, for her Pink Shirt Day butterfly design, winner of last year's design contest. Known as kilila in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, her design reflects Indigenous values of respect, kindness, inclusivity, and community: https://twnation.ca/artwork-by-kadence-lanahmats-george-chosen-for-2025-national-pink-shirt-day/

Today, on International Mother Language Day, we celebrate hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, the language of Tsleil-Waututh people. Colonialism devastated the practice and passing down of our language, but today we can celebrate how our Tsleil-Waututh Language Program is helping to revitalize our hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language.

Our traditional name is spelled səlilwətaɬ. We encourage you to learn hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ by listening to several audio files of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ words spoken by Gabriel George, Director of Language, Culture and Protocol, here: https://twnation.ca/culture-language/
