❄️ FOOSH season is here ❄️
And no… it’s not the sound you make when you slip on the ice (though it might come out that way).
Even though Vancouver is dealing with an atmospheric river right now, many places people travel to this time of year are icy and slippery — which means a higher risk of falls.
FOOSH stands for Fall On an Outstretched Hand, a common winter injury that can lead to wrist, elbow, shoulder, or even collarbone issues. One slip can do more damage than you think!
👵 Why age matters:
As we get older, bone density and reaction time can change, making fractures more likely. After being in a cast or splint, stiffness, weakness, and loss of motion are very common — and that’s where physiotherapy plays a key role.
👐 How physio helps after a FOOSH injury:
• Restore wrist and hand mobility after immobilization
• Improve strength and grip function
• Reduce stiffness and swelling
• Safely guide return to daily activities, work, and sport
• Address balance and fall-prevention strategies to reduce future risk
⚠️ Pro tip for winter walking:
Wear footwear with good traction, keep hands free (skip the phone!), and take shorter steps on icy surfaces.
