How's your Immune System?

As much as it pains me to admit it, Fall is fast approaching. That means shorter, cooler days, wetter weather, and, oh yeah…. “Cold and flu season”. With that in mind, I wanted to share some tips for a healthy immune system.
The “immune system” is a western medicine term, and is not expressly identified in classic TCM. However, we do know that the functions attributed to the western concept of the immune system are in TCM mainly related to the functions of the wei qi (Defensive Qi), which is a product of the healthy functioning of the lungs, kidney, and spleen.
• Red reishi has a very strong ability to optimize the functioning of the heart, lungs, liver, kidney, and pancreas, and it is precisely for this reason that it helps to support and optimize the immune system. Modern day research has shown that the potent polysaccharides contained in the fruiting body of the mushroom actually raise the number of macrophages and T-cells in the blood. Macrophages and T-cells are critical players in the immune system, as their role is essentially to ingest foreign pathogens that invade the body.
• “Jade Windscreen” is another favourite TCM formula of mine at this time of year. It contains 3 herbs: astragalus, atractylodes, and ledebouriella root. It is my “go to” formula for strengthening the wei qi, spleen, and lungs. A fantastic formula to use in women prone to catching a cold when they start their period.
So regardless of whether we are talking about the qi of the lungs, kidney, and spleen, or the stimulation of macrophage and T-cell production, both red reishi, and Jade Windscreen are amazingly potent in their ability to support and optimize healthy immune function.

STRESS......Depending on the source quoted, stress or stress-related ailments account for somewhere between 75-90% of all visits to a physician! Stress has been linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, muscle tension, menstrual irregularities, fatigue, obesity, depression, anxiety, adrenal fatigue, and a plethora of other conditions.
In addition to acupuncture – which offers HUGE stress relief - here are 3 easy tips we can all do to reduce the burden of stress on the body, and immediately improve our health:
1) Commit to engaging in 30-60 minutes of exercise daily. Go for a walk, try a yoga class, ride a bike, pilates, tai chi, spin class – anything that gets your blood moving and your endorphins pumping.
2) Give yourself the gift of positivity. Eliminate negative thought patterns and complaining from your life as much as possible. Try this for just one day, and I guarantee you’ll feel instantly more relaxed and less stressed.
3) Take an “adaptogen”. An adaptogen is a substance that helps the body adapt naturally to cope with the effects of stress. Examples in Chinese medicine are Japanese red reishi, panax ginseng, and cordyceps.
Try 1, 2, or all 3 of the above and enjoy improved energy, vitality, moods, and overall health in your life!
