Our multidisciplinary team is participating in More OB once again, and this session we are brushing up on our skills training in PPH and management of hypertension in pregnancy!

This simulation training was especially realistic. Did anyone else feel like they came back to work and were back in the simulation room again?

Special thanks to all of our MoreOB facilitators for taking us to the moon, and for helping us to foster better teamwork and improved communication in these critical situations!!

A huge congratulations to our very own Eileen Williams!!!

Dr Zolis, Chief of OB/Gyn at NYGHOBGYH writes:

“I wanted to share the good news that Eileen was nominated for and has been awarded a 2025 Patient Safety Stand Out Award for her hard work and dedication to patient safety on labour and delivery here at NYGH.

Eileen Williams, as many of you know, is a dedicated unit secretary on Labour and Delivery at NYGH for over 30 years. She plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety through her unwavering advocacy. She is often the first point of contact for patients, responding promptly to their needs and facilitating clear, efficient communication across the unit. Her commitment to patient care drives her efforts to ensure timely transitions between departments (labour and delivery and the postpartum unit), always prioritizing safety and coordination.

Please join me in congratulating Eileen! “

Congratulations to you Eileen!! When the news came out the chorus of resounding approval from the department came with it. Here are some of the things our team had to say:

“You are a foundation of our unit and I’m so happy to see your recognized for all your work. Your warmth and kindness makes our patients feel calm and welcome as soon as they step through our doors. Warmest congratulations”

“30 Years is a life time of dedication and service! I feel blessed to have you as our advocate and always prompt to help in the midst of all the challenges we face daily on the floor! You are very appreciated! - And I just got here!! Thank you for that big hug - much needed, I must say- the other day! Congratulations again on this award!! You deserve it!!!”

“You have kept this unit together, firmly, with a big smile, for decades. Award and comments are richly deserved.”

Thank you Ellen for being a patient safety advocate and a pillar of warmth and inclusion on L&D!!! We can’t wait to celebrate your award this Friday!!

A Happy Diwali to those celebrating today!!

Our Social Worker Nikita helped to remind our team that today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness day.

“Today, October 15, we recognize Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, a day to honor and remember the babies lost too soon and to acknowledge the unique grief experienced by bereaved parents and families.

This day also offers an opportunity to show our support for families across Canada who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a pregnancy or an infant. Many communities will hold remembrance ceremonies and candlelight vigils, culminating in the International Wave of Light.

At 7 p.m. local time, individuals around the world are invited to light a candle and keep it burning for at least one hour, creating a continuous wave of light that spans the globe for 24 hours in memory of the children who are gone but never forgotten. For more information, please visit the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day - PAIL Network (sunnybrook.ca)

Behind every loss is a story of love”

Thank you Nikita for supporting our community and for this message. Thank you to all those who lit candles tonight. Our hearts are with you ❤️

It’s HPV Prevention week and NYGHOBGYN talked to our very own Dr Kirsten Smith who is an advocate for Cervical Cancer Screening here at NYGH.

“Cervical cancer is the fasting rising cancer in Canada at this moment so it’s got our attention. Ninety percent of these cancers are caused by HPV. A huge number of individuals, up to 75 percent, will contract HPV in their lifetime if they are not vaccinated.

Vaccination is highly effective to prevent both cervical cancer and ge***al warts. Thanks to HPV screening we have the opportunity to find and screen at risk individuals who are at risk of cancer.

We treat many people in our North York General Colposcopy unit who have early cervical changes and can prevent disease progression before it becomes cancerous”

Thanks Dr Smith!!

At NYGHOBGYN we encourage you to talk your primary care provider about when you next qualify for HPV screening. You should also look out for your next reminder in the mail!
