Curious to know more about what we do in your eye exam? Here is some information on the different types of testing besides checking vision:
β Extraocular Movements
You will be asked to follow a target with your eyes while keeping your head still. This tests your eye muscles and identifies if there are any weaknesses or other problems.
β Cover test
Your eyes will be covered one at a time while looking at an object in the distance and an object up close. We are observing the way your eyes move as you are focusing on the different objects, identifying any eye turns.
β Slit-lamp test
In order to have a detailed look at your eyelids, iris, cornea, conjunctiva, lens, retina and other structures, we use a slit lamp which is a type of microscope. This test helps detect conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and changes related to systemic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
β Dilation
Dilating the pupils allows the structures of the back of the eyes, including blood vessels, the retina, and the optic nerve to be better observed. This is especially important to allow identify any retinal breaks, holes or tears. A drop is administered that keep your pupils open wide even in bright light. This exam takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and you may experience light sensitivity and blurry vision for a few hours afterward. Make sure to bring your sunglasses!
