The holiday decorations are packed away, but the worry from your recent visit home might still be lingering. It’s a common reality: long-distance phone calls often mask what an in-person visit reveals about Mom or Dad’s aging process.
Did you notice things that didn't feel quite right?
If you observed these 5 "Red Flags" during your holiday visit, it may be time to start a conversation about extra support at home:
1️⃣ Changes in Hygiene & Appearance: A noticeable decline in grooming, wearing soiled clothes, body odor, or significant, unexplained weight loss.
2️⃣ A Neglected Environment: Finding spoiled food in the fridge, scorched pots on the stove, extreme clutter, or stacks of unopened mail and unpaid bills.
3️⃣ Medication Mismanagement: Evidence of skipped doses, doubled-up pills in organizers, or important prescriptions that haven't been refilled.
4️⃣ Mobility Issues & Mystery Bruises: Unexplained bruising that might indicate unreported falls, or seeing them hold onto furniture to balance as they walk through the house.
5️⃣ Withdrawal and Mood Changes: Sleeping excessive amounts, a lack of interest in hobbies they used to love, or seeming unusually anxious or irritable.
You noticed the signs. Now what?
Seeing these flags doesn't mean they have to leave the home they love. It often just means they need a helping hand to stay there safely.
