✨Wondering if your child might be gifted? At New Horizons Psychology, our Gifted Assessment offers a holistic look at their cognitive, academic, and emotional strengths — not just an IQ number. We combine testing with interviews and a social-emotional screening to fully understand who they are.

If their Full-Scale IQ or General Abilities Index falls around the 98th percentile, they may qualify for a gifted designation — which can open the door to an IEP and enriched learning options in Ontario.

Want to learn more? Message us to talk about next steps or book a screening call. 💬

🍂 A Gentle Reminder for Families

As the days get shorter and schedules get busier, it’s easy for stress and fatigue to sneak in. Take a moment this week to check in — not just on your child’s grades or activities, but on how they’re feeling. 💬

Ask simple questions like:
‘What was something that made you smile today?’ or ‘What’s been feeling tough lately?’ These small moments of connection can make a world of difference.

At New Horizons Psychology, we believe emotional wellness is the foundation for learning and growth. Let’s all slow down, breathe, and nurture both hearts and minds this season. ❤️

✨ Building Executive Functioning Skills at Home

Executive functioning is the set of mental skills that help kids plan, focus, remember, and get things done. For many children and teens, these skills take time — and patience — to develop. Here are a few ways to support growth at home:

✅ Create consistent daily routines
✅ Use checklists or visual planners
✅ Break big tasks into smaller steps
✅ Offer positive reinforcement for effort, not just results

Small, consistent changes can make a big difference in your child’s confidence and independence. If your child struggles with organization, focus, or self-management, our team can help create personalized strategies for success. 💙

💬 Let’s Talk About Anxiety in Children & Teens

It’s normal for children to worry sometimes — about school, friendships, or trying new things. But when anxiety begins to interfere with daily life, it can feel overwhelming for both kids and parents.

Some signs to watch for include:
• Frequent stomach aches or headaches with no clear cause
• Avoiding school or social situations
• Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
• Reassurance-seeking (‘Will everything be okay?’)

At New Horizons Psychology, we help children and teens learn to recognize their emotions, build coping skills, and face challenges with confidence. Through compassionate counselling and evidence-based strategies, we work together to make anxiety feel manageable — one small step at a time. 🌿

If you’re concerned about your child’s anxiety, know that help is available and healing is possible. 💙

📚 Report Card Season: More Than Just Grades

As report cards come home, remember - they’re just one snapshot of your child’s learning journey. Every student has unique strengths, challenges, and ways of understanding the world.

If your child’s report card raises questions about focus, motivation, or learning progress, it might be worth exploring what’s beneath the surface. A psychoeducational assessment can help identify learning patterns and offer strategies to help your child thrive with confidence.

✨ Celebrate effort, encourage curiosity, and focus on growth - not perfection.
We’re here to help families turn worry into understanding and support. 🌿
