Family gatherings during the holidays can bring connection — and sometimes old patterns.

You might notice yourself slipping back into roles you outgrew years ago:

• the peacemaker
• the responsible one
• the quiet one
• the fixer
• the “easy” child

These roles often formed to keep the family functioning, but they don’t always reflect who you are today.

You’re allowed to show up as your current self — not the version others remember

Go out!
Meet people !
Workout !
Go for a walk !

Are you actually aware of your given needs in a given moment? When we feel drained or low, we tend to turn to what we think we should be doing instead of what we need.
It’s important to know what you need at given time. What may work for your friend may not work for you and so good intended advice may rub you the wrong way. What may work one day may not work the next day. For example, chilling out with friends may be awesome and rejuvenating one week. However, the next week you may feel drained by those very friends and want to spend some time reading a book, or walking, or doing something very different.

spend some time and make a list of things that rejuvenate you. And the next time you start to feel drained and low pause and look at that list carefully and ask yourself what do I need in this moment?

Friendships matter
Friendships grow
Friendships wither
Friendships fall apart
Friendships can be healing but only when they’re meaningful!
Remember not all friendships are alike, not all give the same, not all take the same from us, not all are as fulfilling!

Here’s a post that recognizes the effects of chronic stress on our mental health. But it hopes to also recognize that many of us have certain stressors which don’t have solutions right now. However, it’s important to recognize that there is power in acts of self-care and healing. And for many of us to show up for things, people, and causes that matter self-care and healing is a nonnegotiable. It’s an everyday practice.

This post is about learning to put yourself first and listening to your needs. Many people come to therapy overworked, overwhelmed and feeling resentful. While there are many reasons that can lead one to feeling these ways - many times when exploring deeper we find that we don’t know how to put ourselves first. Remember choosing yourself first in an act of stretch not selfishness.
