This week we will posting some information on PAD and explaining what is, how it affects you and what you can do if you have it.
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD), also known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), is a condition that affects the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. It involves the narrowing or blockage of arteries that supply blood to the limbs, typically the legs.

PVD/PAD is usually caused by atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque within the arteries, which leads to reduced blood flow to the affected areas. Common symptoms of PVD include leg pain, cramping, weakness, numbness, or aching in the muscles, particularly during physical activity. In severe cases, it can lead to non-healing wounds or ulcers in the legs or feet.

Why do we encourage use of compression stockings for patients with venous disease?
Compression stockings work by applying pressure to the legs, promoting better blood circulation and preventing the pooling of blood in the lower extremities. Here's how they work:

1. Graduated compression: Compression stockings are designed to provide graduated compression, meaning the pressure is highest at the ankles and gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This design helps promote blood flow back towards the heart.

2. Compression levels: Compression stockings are available in different compression levels, typically measured in millimeters of mercury.

3. Compression techniques: Compression stockings use different techniques to apply pressure to the legs. The most common techniques are elastic and graduated compression.

4. Effects on blood flow: When you wear compression stockings, the pressure they exert helps squeeze the veins in the legs, which improves venous return (the flow of blood back to the heart). This prevents blood from pooling in the lower legs and feet, reducing swelling and discomfort.

5. Medical conditions: Compression stockings are commonly used to manage various conditions, such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency, lymphedema, and to prevent blood clots during long periods of immobility, like during air travel or post-surgery recovery.

It's important to note that compression stockings should be properly fitted and prescribed by a healthcare professional to ensure the right level of compression and a proper fit.

Varicose veins are a common condition. They occur when the valves in the veins become weak or damaged, causing blood to pool in the veins and leading to their characteristic bulging and twisting appearance. While varicose veins are usually harmless, they can cause discomfort, pain, and swelling in some people. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes to medical procedures, depending on the severity of the condition.
