Dr Rodger Shortt is a specialist plastic surgeon who graduated from Queen’s Medical School in 2004 and became certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2009. Dr Shortt is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor and the Director of the cosmetic surgery training program for the plastic surgery residents of McMaster University. In addition, he shares his plastic surgery expertise by teaching other doctors Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Musculoskeletal Limb Support. Dr Rodger Shortt has received considerable recognition in his academic career. At Queen’s Medical School, he was the recipient of the Rattray Scholarship in Ophthalmology, the Bracken Award for Academic Achievement, and the Queen’s University Surgery Award. During his plastic surgery residency at McMaster University, he was a recipient of the Best Clinical Research Paper. Dr Shortt has been actively involved in plastic surgery research, has been invited to present his research at national and international conferences, and has published articles in key medical journals. Why I think personalized patient care is important:

“When I talk to patients, everybody’s unique, everybody has their own goals, everybody comes in with different shapes and forms and I think it’s my job to help them understand how we get from where they are to where they want to be, and also if it’s possible or realistic.

I think it’s important to share with them the technical nuances that are specific to them. I think different people want different relationships with their surgeon as well. Some relationships I have with people are really fun. We joke around quite a bit and I really enjoy that but it’s not right for everybody.

Some people are looking for somebody a little bit more serious in those situations. You tone down a little bit to make sure that they feel comfortable. I never want humour to come in the way of comfort for people. I try to use it the opposite to actually build relationships, but it’s not right for everybody.”

What is recovery like after a MOMMY MAKEOVER?

“When I talk to people about recovery after a Mommy Makeover, it’s really the Tummy Tuck, which is going to be the longer healing phase. And it’s not terribly painful, but you’re definitely moving slow for a few days. So I tell people the first few days you’re moving slow. By a week, I would say half the people walking into their post-op visit are moving normal. But that leaves half the people still moving just a little slow. They’re not in a significant discomfort, but they’re just not moving quick.

When we talk to people about their scars, scars go through a whole healing process and we walk people through it each step of the way. So what I do in surgery is important, but also what we do after surgery is important. We use taping to decrease tension. At about three weeks, we switch to silicone and massage and we instruct you on that. Final scars are maybe are a year away.

So the scars that you see at three months, they’re not necessarily reflective of what it’s going to look like at a year. After three months, there’s really nothing to do other than just be mindful about sun exposure on a fresh scar.”

Considering a LABIAPLASTY?
Here’s what you need to know…
 Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the l***a to reduce physical discomfort and improve appearance. It’s often chosen by women who feel self-conscious, experience irritation, or notice changes after childbirth.

The l***a minora (inner lips) and l***a majora (outer lips) can both be treated:

🌸 Minora: Reduced when excess tissue causes discomfort or extends beyond the outer lips.

Considering Labiaplasty?
Here’s what you need to know.

“So I think one of the important considerations is what the end goal is, what you’re hoping to look like. I think that oftentimes when people have a lot of l***a fullness, they want to go to the opposite extreme. And I think it’s important to counsel them what the right amount is to remove.

So we spent a fair bit of time talking about exactly where the tissue is going to be removed, exactly what’s going to stay. I would say by far the most common reason people have a Labiaplasty is they just feel that their l***a minora the inside lip is too full that it either aesthetically is not what they’re looking for or it’s actually uncomfortable that it can get caught in clothing or get caught during sexual relations and they just want it made smaller.

The procedure itself is fairly straightforward - you’re asleep, it takes less than an hour to do, you wake up and it’s done, and then we’d follow you up a week later to make sure all is well.”
