Jean Mary Hartog ~
It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Jean Hartog, aged 97, who went to heaven on December 10, 2025, with her beloved daughter Caroline by her side. Jean lived a long, healthy, and active life and was admitted to the hospital in 100 Mile House one week before her passing.
Jean McLellan was born on August 12, 1928, in Burnaby, British Columbia, the first of three children. She was raised in Burnaby by her parents, and grandmother, with her brothers Raymond and Norman. After completing business school, where she learned to operate accounting machines, Jean worked for a large company in Vancouver.
In 1957, Jean met Martin Hartog, a new immigrant from the Netherlands, and the two swiftly fell in love. Martin’s parents operated a chocolate and candy import business on the floor below the apartment where Jean lived with her mother. Jean often said that Martin was a true romantic. They were married in 1959.
Jean and Martin settled in Kelowna, where they raised their two daughters, Caroline and Denise. The family later spent seven years in Holland while Martin pursued his calling to make a difference in the lives of others through his work with World Relief. During this time, Jean greatly enjoyed keeping the office's books.
In the early 2000s, Jean and Martin moved to 100 Mile House to be closer to Caroline and her family. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Martin in 2004, as well as her two younger brothers.
Jean will be deeply missed by her daughters Caroline and Denise; her son-in-law Vern; her grandson Lynden (Madelyn) and granddaughter Netanya; Denise’s children, Krystal and Nicolas of Alberta; her sister-in-law Dorothy McLellan; and her seven nieces and nephews.

Jean will be laid to rest with her husband in 100 Mile House on December 16th, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.

A celebration of life will be held on their anniversary May 21st, 2026.

July is Bereaved Parents Month.

A gentle reminder to hold space for all the parents quietly carrying the weight of grief.
For the ones who’ve lost a baby through miscarriage, who’ve held their breath through stillbirth, who’ve had to say goodbye far too soon to a newborn.
For the parents whose child is no longer here, who face birthdays and anniversaries with empty arms.
For the silent battles with infertility, for the unimaginable pain of losing multiples, for the heart-wrenching decisions like TFMR (termination for medical reasons).
For every mother and father learning how to live with a piece of their heart missing.

Your pain is real. Your story matters. And you are not alone.

Reminders of our grief are everywhere.

They’re engrained in our everyday routines.

It shows up in the most unexpected of places sometimes.

But I know it all points to the significance of their presence here and how deeply it has impacted us, both then and now.

The ache is real, and it’s okay to acknowledge that pain when it surfaces.

The ache of their absence is an indicator of how profoundly meaningful their presence was.

So if you are greeted by your grief today in an unexpected way, whether it be through a song or a smell, a story or a survey question at the doctor, please remember:

The ache endures but the love remains in these spaces too.

Love is forever, even if its forms of expression change when we face loss.

So, whether it’s been a minute, an hour, a month, a year, or decades: your grief will always matter.

And when it finds ways to surface and surprise you, please know that there is nothing wrong with allowing your heart to acknowledge and process that pain in your own way and at your own pace.

I’m sending hugs to everyone whose loss feels especially tender today.

They were here and it mattered. 💜

Happy Father’s Day to all kinds of fathers. 🤍

To the biological dads, the stepdads, the single dads, the adoptive dads, and the father figures who stepped in when they didn’t have to.

Today is a reminder that love isn’t measured by DNA but by presence, sacrifice, and heart.

To the dads who work long hours to provide,
to those who carry the weight of the world in silence just to keep their families safe, we see your tired eyes and your unspoken prayers. You are the strength behind so many dreams.

To the single fathers who play both roles,
juggling meals, schoolwork, and bedtime stories with hands that never seem to rest, your love is enough, even when you doubt it.

To the stepfathers who chose to love a child as their own, your choice is powerful. Your love is unconditional.

To the fathers who have lost a child, and to the children who have lost a father, we hold space for your grief today. Your love didn’t end with goodbye.

To the dads who live far away and long for their child’s hug, to the ones working overseas, missing birthdays and milestones, your sacrifices are not invisible. Your absence is filled with love that spans oceans.

To the fathers in heaven, we still talk about you.
We still feel your love in every lesson, every memory, every quiet moment when we wish you were here.

And to those who never got to meet their child,
or those longing to become fathers, you are not forgotten today. There is love in your waiting and in your hope.

So here’s to every kind of father.
Your love builds worlds.
Your heart shapes lives.
Your presence, your effort, your care, they mean more than words could ever say.

Thank you for showing up, in all the ways that matter.

Happy Father’s Day.
