While we have enjoyed chewing gum fresh from edible conifers for decades, only recently did I start playing with making a remineralizing gum.
Simply collect from an edible tree (Douglas fir, pine, spruce are common), making sure to get 100% accurate ID. Melt on parchment paper at 250F until liquid. (Careful, it's flammable, and if it gets too hot it won't turn to chewing gum.) While liquid, sprinkle on your additives - calcium or hydroxyapatite for remineralizing, cinnamon for taste, resveratrol for gums... lots of possibilities! Allow it to cool completely, and break into pieces. (If it bends, it hasn't cooked long enough.)
When you bite down it will shatter at first. Keep chewing, and in a few seconds it will collect into a chewing gum that lasts for days. It will degrade without polluting the land, too.
Easy, cheap, delicious. Conifer resin chewing gum has lots of great benefits, some exaggerated, some very true. If you're like us and can't tolerate commercial gums, this may be a viable option!
Make sure to use ethical foraging practices.
Enjoy!
