Red Hawk Healing

Red Hawk Healing Foraging, classes, card readings, healing Energy Healing is an ancient art and comes in many forms.

Specifically, the aura (the blueprint for the body, mind, and emotions) is worked on and balanced in order to bring about a healed state. This aura, or energy field, is very complex and is always changing. You may have heard of Chakras, energy vortices within the aura (see right photo), but the energy field also contains meridians (utilized in acupressure/reflexology), as well as many "layers" that hold the mental, emotional, and spiritual blueprints of your being. By working on the energy field, you can greatly affect physical/emotional/mental/spiritual well-being. Reiki is a Japanese "Hands-On" healing technique that is being used successfully in the treatment of various illnesses and conditions, including but not limited to: depression, insomnia, cancer, aches, pains, and injuries. Jessica Smith, a Reiki Master/Teacher in Deroche, British Columbia, is a dedicated teacher and practitioner of Reiki and other healing arts, including Energy Healing, Crystal and Sound Therapy, Shamanic Healing, and Card Readings. She has been a healer all her life, but has fervently studied the art of healing since the age of nine. She was also a part-time volunteer for the Mission Hospice Society at Christine Morrison Hospice, which has a list of other Reiki Practitioners within the hospital floor.

Remember that foraging is an act of communicating with the land. It is not a free-for-all grab. We are tremendously blessed to be able to find foods and medicines that grow wild and free, but when we harvest without thought for the land, the animals, the plants, Indigenous rights/use, and our communities in general, we do great harm.

Pick gently. Harvest respectfully and knowledgeably.

It is so good to make medicines again 😍

Dandelion flowers are a powerful healer and a master of juxtaposition: Ostentatious but unassuming. Everywhere, but not invasive. The dreamer, the livener, effortlessly slipping into the forgotten and unwanted places to bring sunshine and a bit of wildness. Grounded. Survivalist. Thriving. Hated by many, but needed by everyone. Humble, yet bold and loud.

These flowers are, I estimate, less than 1% growing on our lawn right now, so there are plenty left for the insects. Hands yellow with pollen, I can feel in the flowers the laughter of my children as they have rolled and run and jumped across the earth through which the plants are growing. This is an excellent activity to get kids foraging and medicine-making, too. These particular flowers will be utilized for salve, which has incredible healing and pain-relieving properties. No extras needed beyond the flowers, oil, and later some beeswax.

The humble dandelion, healer of all.

I'm back in business!

After a scary health crisis that was resolved with the removal of my appendix, I am grateful to be feeling well enough to be offering Oracle Card Readings again. Seriously, thrilled to be feeling so good!

As many of you know, I have been reading cards for over 25 years (first for friends and family, and then for the community as part of RHH). I work with Oracle Cards that include Druidic and nature influence, and focus on bringing about balance, emotional health, and general wellness. Each reading looks different depending on the intention and person.

My prices have not changed ($15, $30, $45, $60 for their respective time allotments), and readings are usually over the phone or by video call.

I am not doing energy healings again yet as I do not have space, but perhaps in future. Classes and workshops are in the works.

It is good to be back. It's good to have energy again, and wellness again. Bodies are such funny things!

Wishing you all health and wellness, and may you know how worthy, loved, and wonderful you are. 💚

Salsify (Tragopogon dubius, T. pratensis, T. miscellus) is a highly invasive plant that pushes out native flora, causing real damage to sensitive ecosystems... and also happens to taste amazing.

Lightly fried or boiled, the roots have an incredible, buttery taste with oyster-like notes. Other varieties have been cultivated for many years and are enjoyed in high-end restaurants. This is truly one of my favourite foraged foods! The greens are edible as well, raw or cooked.

Make sure to catch them young while the roots are tender, before they flower. If you happen to find them flowered, you can still harvest and destroy (or eat!) the flower before it goes to seed. (Buds can also be fried up or eaten raw!)

Be careful when harvesting to not harm sensitive areas in which they may be growing. Note as well that there are toxic lookalikes. Salsify will have a thick milky latex when harvesting (keep some vinegar or rubbing alcohol to easily wipe this off).

Enjoy!

Did you know you can eat a tree?

The inner bark of edible trees can be harvested, soaked, dried, and ground into flour. These cookies, which are 1:1:1 bark to buckwheat to corn masa, are made with doulas fir inner bark and douglas fir needle sugar.

Often seen as a survival food, shunned by some despite its incredible history through different cultures, this food source is full of minerals and sugars, perfect for the lean winter months.

When harvesting, take from branches to avoid harming the tree itself. Remember to use the inner bark, not the outer. This is easy to do in spring, but takes a bit of work in winter. The flour does not bind very well, so it is best mixed with another flour of your choice, but can be used alone if you are out in the woods. Enjoy sweet or savoury.

We had the joy of sharing these with a large group of kids and adults today, along with spruce needle tea.

Wishing you all health and vitality through the cold months and always!

It wouldn't be Samhain season without a witch's brew!

Fallen lichens, tree bark, and foraged mushrooms boiled with citric acid and alum-mordanted wool (added after this photo).

There is magic in creating cloth painted with your natural landscape. Our ancestors were nourished by the natural world and clothed by it, too. Playing with natural dyes in this new area is bringing me all sorts of joy, creating deeper roots and lasting memories.

I will share the results in a few days.

“What can I say that I have not said before?
So I’ll say it again.
The leaf has a song in it.
Stone is the face of patience.
Inside the river there is an unfinishable story
and you are somewhere in it
and it will never end until all ends.

Take your busy heart to the art museum
and the chamber of commerce
but take it also to the forest.
The song you heard singing in the leaf
when you were a child
is singing still.
I am of years lived, so far, seventy-four,
and the leaf is singing still.”

In this beautiful new (to me) landscape, I search for abundant high-carb, higher calorie foodsources. While on the coast, for us these have been nuts which are in abundance (acorns, hazel, chestnut, black walnut, etc). I haven't found too many nut trees in the Cariboo, but I have found Salsify (Tragopogon dubius)!

This plant has other common names such as goatsbeard and oysterplant, and is classified as a noxious invasive. It. Is. Everywhere. The leaves are tasty in salads, and the roots hold an impressive nutrient profile. Cultivated varieties are used in high-end restaurant dishes, and can be stored longer-term just like carrots. The root is honestly delicious! And while I can't say they taste like oysters to me, it lends an incredible flavour to meals.

As the plant matures, the roots get a bit woody, so harvest while the plant is smaller (and pluck/destroy flowers and seed puffs to prevent their spread, which can harm native ecosystems).

This batch was served with sweet potato and carrot, and honestly is one of my new favourite meals.

Be sure to get a 100% positive ID as there are lookalikes which can be toxic.

It’s been ages since I’ve done an About Me, so here we go!

My name is Jess. I have many passions, but helping people is top of the list, however I can do so. I have spent the last 18 years of my life running this little healing business, doing everything from energy healing and oracle card readings, to teaching classes on foraging and herbal healing, psychic development, energy healing, meditation, connecting with Nature, wildcrafting workshops, and wilderness survival. And, answering lots and lots of questions!

The last few years have been a ride. From parenting kids with unique medical needs, losing my dad, moving to the Cariboo, and other big events which I can't detail here, I haven’t been able to put as much into this as I once did. I still enjoy teaching classes (big or small), and oracle card readings. Lately, I’ve been facilitating a free nature program in my new area, as well as being part of a grassroots community disaster survival and community wellness initiative that I am super proud of. I have also published a fiction book I am very proud of! And am currently working on the sequel.

I feel intensely blessed by being able to do the work that I do. Every interaction is pretty magical. I get to see the authentic, brilliant selves of the people I am working with, and I always walk away feeling like something pretty special has happened.

Nature is my happy place. I regularly talk to plants, and listen. I believe in communication with the earth, and that if we listen, she’ll tell us what we need to know. It's been such a great experience to get to know a new landscape, to make friends with new trees, and find old friends, too! The plants have saved me and my loved ones many times - there is a profound love and respect for these beings.

I'm a spinner and weaver, gardener and parent. I love carving and hiking, writing and reading, and have a fierce joy for learning new things and experimenting with fibre arts. I love to make food (vegan, mostly raw) and paint/make art when I can for the fun of it. My favourite colour is green, and my favourite smell is douglas fir resin.

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading 🙂

Rosehips are full of vitamin C and antioxidants, perfect for coming winter weather. Dry for tea, or boil into jams and jellies. The taste is incredible, especially with savoury meals (I love it on raw vegan cheese and crackers). Make sure to remove all the seeds and fuzz as these are quite irritating to skin and the digestive system. Rather than a spoon, I find a sharp paring knife works well to remove everything.

Enjoy!

Now that we are settled in our new home, I am once again free for Oracle card readings! My prices have stayed the same and readings can be done by video call or phone. Here is a peek at a few of the decks I am using these days.

I have been reading cards for about 24 years and it's one of my absolute favourite things to do. Over the years as my business has evolved, I am so glad that this offering has remained consistent. I love to walk with people through healing and spiritual development, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to do so.
