Spring will soon be...Sprung! I know we’ve had a lot of snow again this year, but let's revel in the fact Spring is coming. Let’s remember when we clear snow, we can skip the gym, save money and benefit from nice clear driveways and sidewalks. We all need to get a move on and be more active in the winter. Many of us have kept active with shoveling, snow blowing, skiing, snowshoeing, running, gym activities, and more. It’s all good exercise, as long as you don’t hurt yourself! We're all preparing for spring by shaping up.

For those of us who haven't, fear not. Plan to start exercising now in time for spring. Why not start with some easy walking in the house, maybe up and down your stairs, or jump on your treadmill. Some people head to a large store or mall to do some safe walking. Even if it’s only 20 minutes, that’s much better than nothing. A little walking, or snow clearing, now, will have you in much better shape for later when the weather gets nicer and warmer and we want to be outdoors. That good ole spring fever! Of course, you need to do a few stretches so you don’t stiffen up. If you find you are too stiff or sore to exercise or clear snow, then maybe you need to come in for an adjustment. We keep you moving and help make you healthier.

Wiarton Willie didn’t see his shadow this year. Somehow this may assure us that spring will come early. Our bet, it will come around March 20th.

Also, ‘daylight savings time’ is still a thing. At 2 am March 8th, it’s time to turn the clocks ahead. We remind ourselves “Spring Forward, Fall Back”. This is very exciting as it means we get an extra hour of sunlight...at least in the afternoon that is. Okay it’s actually darker for an hour longer in the morning, but this gradually gets better as the days grow longer.

The spring birds are returning, or have they been here all along? We have cardinals, blue jays, juncos, chickadees, finches, and our new friend Barry the Barred Owl. He sits in our 100-year-old pine tree. February is mating month so we'll steer clear!

The summer will soon be here with all of the hot days, fast growing grass, and so many more things to do. Let's enjoy what’s left of this winter by enjoying the down time, seeing the good things, and keeping as active as possible. Keep moving and remember, we've got your back.

After starting a good stretching routine and cardio plan, like I discussed in the past two weeks, it's time to look at building muscles. This includes any strength training and most importantly, core strengthening. Most of us are not interested in building muscles to their maximum size, right? How about toning and enough strength to perform all your usual daily activities without difficulty.
So, with this in mind let's look at some of the more important muscles to strengthen and what exercises to do. If you enjoy being able to get up and walk, then you need to focus on strengthening your legs. However, if you find your job and/or hobbies cause you to get over 10,000 steps per day, you may be getting enough. Walking is one of the best leg exercises, which also strengthens the back muscles. Doing a few half squats or lunges are great for leg strengthening. You should also consider getting on your hands and knees and lifting the opposite arm and leg, as well as side lying leg lifts.
For your arms, chest, and upper back, use simple light dumbbells or elastics. Bench press or flys, bicep curls, shoulder lifts, and some type of rowing are all good.
At this point you should focus on a little more core strengthening. Doing opposite arm and leg and side lying leg lifts are a great start to core. Next lie on your back with your knees bent and suck in your stomach while lifting a straight leg up half way and hold. Then with both feet on the ground lift up your hips about six inches and hold (bridge). Finally combine the straight leg lift with the raised hips - it's called a combination bridge and leg lift. Sit-ups are not recommended. Instead consider trying some easy, short, planks ... forward on elbows and toes and side ways on one elbow and sides of feet.
Any of these exercises can be a little tender at first and may cause a bit of discomfort the next day. If you are too sore, you should stop doing them and visit your Chiropractor asap. Otherwise, you will gradually get stronger and should notice some things are easier to do and you will find you don't hurt yourself as easily any more. Good luck.

Gordon Lightfoot

Gordon Lightfoot

The Gordon Lightfoot 'Golden Leaves' sculpture on the shores of Lake Couchiching is stunning in any season, but when winter adds it's frosty magic, becomes truly breathtaking!
The statue, created by sculptor Timothy P. Schmalz, stands over 13ft tall and depicts Lightfoot with his guitar surrounded by maple leaves illustrating scenes from 26 of his most famous songs.
I love this location during the Mariposa Folk Festival when Barnfield Point brims with joyful crowds - music and laughter filling the air! But to walk this trail in the silent solitude of winter brings it's own deeply Canadian exquisiteness!

i’m proud of you 💛

You made it through the darkest stretch of the year 🌞💛

From mid-November to late January, the days can feel extra heavy…

less light, more stress, and a whole lot of “just getting through it.”

But you’re here. You kept going. And that matters.

So if no one’s told you lately: I’m proud of you. Keep taking it one day at a time because brighter days are already on the way.

Stay safe this weekend. Hopefully you can stay home. More snow is on the way tonight & Sunday. Remember to take breaks whether snowshoveling or blowing. It's not only hard on our backs, it's a stressor on our hearts in this cold .. -29° overnight without the windchill. Keep warm. We've got your back, Monday at 10 am. Parts of Hwy 11 are closed, now, from Barrie to Orillia!

After starting your stretching routine and finding you feel looser, more energized, ready for whatever, it may be time to look at increasing your cardio. It's likely some of us are doing enough already - if not a regular exercise routine, then an active day with lots of walking with work, or chores. Many of us are not getting enough. How much is enough? Most national bodies suggest at least 150 minutes of cardio per week. That's 30 minutes, 5 days a week, or 50 minutes, 3 days per week. You could also try to do some every day- about 22 minutes. This could simply be a short walk around a couple blocks, or to the store, or to work. Easy to do and as long as you get your heart rate up to about 90-110 or so, depending on your age, your health will benefit. Shoveling snow, by the way counts as fairly strenuous cardio.
How does your health benefit? Please do a Google search - heart, brain, circulation, mood, sugar metabolism, weight, cancers, and see how many more parts of your health will improve. You can always choose to do more after you get used to this first stage. For some, it will be hard to do even 20 minutes of cardio each day, but do as much as you comfortably can now while you are still able. Your future healthy self will thank you.
Next week check back for tips on starting a weight-lifting, or strengthening routine.

Ok, I've heard from enough people already this year. "I'm sore, stiff, tired and it's only the first, or second week into the year". It could be there is a new drug we haven't heard of but I doubt it. It's much more likely you simply need to follow through on those ideas that you will do more exercise this year. The really good news is that you will notice something very early on and it's not that hard to do enough exercise to feel the difference.
The most common thing most of the sore/stiff people need to start with is more stretching. I could tell and show you hundreds of different exercises that stretch your muscles and joints, but you likely know plenty right now.
First think about what happens to joints and muscles that don't move as much, or as far as they used to. What do you think? They aren't able to move as far after a while right? Use it or lose it. So, start stretching a little more each day right now. Stretch your neck and shoulders, hips, and back. It might take five minutes but over a few days you will notice a difference. Then, maybe, you will be ready for some cardio or strength straining exercises. Be sure to check back here next week.
Try this simple stretching plan to improve posture that was produced to help kids, but works well for all of us that are kids at heart.

There’s still time to show your support for proposed changes to provide patients in Ontario with more connected and convenient care closer to home. Join the OCA’s letter-writing campaign to support the Ontario government’s proposed changes that would authorize chiropractors to order MRIs, CT scans and diagnostic ultrasounds so that patients can return to the lives they love sooner.
