I've posted this poem before but it's a message I needed to hear again today - the universe is telling me to take a deep breath. Deep. Breath. Definitely worth a reshare. ❤️❤️❤️

POEM:

my brain and
heart divorced
a decade ago
over who was
to blame about
how big of a mess
I have become
eventually,
they couldn't be
in the same room
with each other
now my head and heart
share custody of me
I stay with my brain
during the week
and my heart
gets me on weekends
they never speak to one another
- instead, they give me
the same note to pass
to each other every week
and their notes they
send to one another always
says the same thing:
"This is all your fault"
on Sundays
my heart complains
about how my
head has let me down
in the past
and on Wednesday
my head lists all
of the times my
heart has screwed
things up for me
in the future
they blame each
other for the
state of my life
there's been a lot
of yelling - and crying
so,
lately, I've been
spending a lot of
time with my gut
who serves as my
unofficial therapist
most nights, I sneak out of the
window in my ribcage
and slide down my spine
and collapse on my
gut's plush leather chair
that's always open for me
~ and I just sit sit sit sit
until the sun comes up
last evening,
my gut asked me
if I was having a hard
time being caught
between my heart
and my head
I nodded
I said I didn't know
if I could live with
either of them anymore
"my heart is always sad about
something that happened yesterday
while my head is always worried
about something that may happen tomorrow,"
I lamented
my gut squeezed my hand
"I just can't live with
my mistakes of the past
or my anxiety about the future,"
I sighed
my gut smiled and said:
"in that case,
you should
go stay with your
lungs for a while,"
I was confused
- the look on my face gave it away
"if you are exhausted about
your heart's obsession with
the fixed past and your mind's focus
on the uncertain future
your lungs are the perfect place for you
there is no yesterday in your lungs
there is no tomorrow there either
there is only now
there is only inhale
there is only exhale
there is only this moment
there is only breath
and in that breath
you can rest while your
heart and head work
their relationship out."
this morning,
while my brain
was busy reading
tea leaves
and while my
heart was staring
at old photographs
I packed a little
bag and walked
to the door of
my lungs
before I could even knock
she opened the door
with a smile and as
a gust of air embraced me
she said
"what took you so long?"

Take a minute today in a quiet room. Take a deep breath.
What has 2021 taught you?
What will you bring with you into this new year?
What will you let go of?
What would make you healthy this year - body, mind and soul?
Set an intention for the year to come.
Now go pursue it - on purpose!
Wishing you a year full of new mistakes and new lessons, love and so much happiness! Happy 2022!

LOVE THIS!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Sending a little shout out to our fellas this morning!
I tend to focus on women’s mental health because it’s the population I see the most but let's not forget the men we love, who often suffer in silence. Due to social pressures and mental health stigma, men are less likely than women to recognize or acknowledge and seek help for psychological issues. Anxiety and depression are a weakness that men are not supposed to feel, let alone talk about! In Canada, 4 out of every 5 su***de victims are male and these numbers are consistent with findings across the globe. Schizophrenia is also a growing concern in the male population, particularly in the 20-24 yo age group.

Divorce, andropause, grief and PTSD are all common triggers for depression in men. Boys and young men who are s*xually diverse or from culturally diverse backgrounds are a population of rapidly growing concern when it comes to mental health and lack of mental health supports.

The male population often experience depression by feeling angry or irritable. They may engage in behaviors to distract them from their feelings, such as drinking, drug use and other risk-taking behaviours. Skipping school or a loss of interest in work and hobbies is common. Aggression is also common and can lead to interpersonal violence. Physical symptoms include changes in sleeping, eating, concentration, or aches and pains such as headaches, stomach aches or diffuse muscle and joint pain.

Social connectedness is vital – we have to encourage our boys and young men to talk and facilitate communication between male peers. We have to do away with the “tough guy” definition of masculinity. Fellas (or women who are seeing them struggle) – talk to your MD or Naturopathic doctor about best treatment options. Book an appointment to chat with a psychotherapist. You are not alone and you do not need to suffer in silence. Your mental health matters!

When a patient first comes to see me, I have the immense pleasure of spending a full 90 minutes with them, learning all about their health history and current health concerns. As part of a complete intake, I ask my patients about recent blood work. If they do not have any, I send them over to the lab myself! Of course, each patient is unique and as such I am always looking into different issues, even if the presenting condition is the same. That having been said, there are patterns!!!

I often want to know the following levels (if relevant to s*x and age group) when a patient presents with depression or anxiety symptoms:

 Ferritin/iron levels (CBC and Ferritin or a full iron panel)
 Vitamin D (D 25 Hydroxy)
 Thyroid levels (TSH and Free T3, or a Full Thyroid panel)
 Blood sugar (Fasting glucose and HbA1c)
 Hormone levels (Day 3 Estradiol, Day 21 Progesterone, FSH, LH, Free or Total Testosterone, etc.)
 Vitamin B12

These are such simple tests to run but they provide me with a ton of info, whether in-range, out of range or suboptimal (NB. There is a big difference between within normal range and optimal! A level can be within range and still be causing unwanted symptoms!). In general, these exacerbating factors are also fairly easy issues to correct and in doing so, have a significant positive impact on depression and anxiety symptoms. Correcting these issues allows my patients to feel like the fog is lifting and motivates them to continue to work with me to address and treat root cause.
