When a patient first comes to see me, I have the immense pleasure of spending a full 90 minutes with them, learning all about their health history and current health concerns. As part of a complete intake, I ask my patients about recent blood work. If they do not have any, I send them over to the lab myself! Of course, each patient is unique and as such I am always looking into different issues, even if the presenting condition is the same. That having been said, there are patterns!!!
I often want to know the following levels (if relevant to s*x and age group) when a patient presents with depression or anxiety symptoms:
Ferritin/iron levels (CBC and Ferritin or a full iron panel)
Vitamin D (D 25 Hydroxy)
Thyroid levels (TSH and Free T3, or a Full Thyroid panel)
Blood sugar (Fasting glucose and HbA1c)
Hormone levels (Day 3 Estradiol, Day 21 Progesterone, FSH, LH, Free or Total Testosterone, etc.)
Vitamin B12
These are such simple tests to run but they provide me with a ton of info, whether in-range, out of range or suboptimal (NB. There is a big difference between within normal range and optimal! A level can be within range and still be causing unwanted symptoms!). In general, these exacerbating factors are also fairly easy issues to correct and in doing so, have a significant positive impact on depression and anxiety symptoms. Correcting these issues allows my patients to feel like the fog is lifting and motivates them to continue to work with me to address and treat root cause.
