At this week’s staff meeting, we were proud to come together in support of North Simcoe Victim Services and their Smile Cookie campaign.

Thanks to the generosity of NSMHPCN and Hospice, our team had the opportunity to enjoy some delicious cookies while contributing to an important cause that supports individuals and families in times of crisis.

It was a small but meaningful way to show our collective commitment to compassion and community care.

We’re grateful to be part of a community that continues to lift each other up and support vital services across North Simcoe.

Wednesday Wisdom: Stress Awareness Month Wrap-Up

As Stress Awareness Month closes, remember: stress doesn’t follow a calendar.

Even as April ends, daily pressures persist—busy schedules, caregiving duties, uncertainty, and the quiet weights we carry. Stress shows up differently for each of us, often lingering longer than expected.

But so do our tools for self-care.

The smallest habits make the biggest difference: a few deep breaths to start the day, fresh air on a walk, reaching out to someone who listens, or permission to rest without guilt.

Self-care isn’t a one-time task—it’s a practice we return to, again and again.

Sometimes the heaviest burdens lighten when we set them down, even briefly—letting go of what can wait, sharing the load, tending only what’s immediate.

In caregiving, volunteering, or simply living, grace lives in the pause.

You don’t have to carry everything all at once.

What’s one small pause you’ll give yourself today? Share below. 💙

Myth vs. Fact Friday 💙 Volunteer Edition

Myth: Volunteers are “nice to have” — extra helpers who support the team, but aren’t essential.

Fact: Volunteers are an essential part of the care team. They bring a unique kind of support that cannot be replaced—one rooted in presence, compassion, and human connection. While clinical staff focus on medical care, volunteers help meet the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of those we serve.

They create space for moments that matter.

Volunteers are often the ones who have the time to simply be—to sit quietly with someone who doesn’t want to be alone, to listen without needing to fix anything, to share a story, a laugh, or even comfortable silence. These moments may seem small, but they carry immense meaning for clients and families navigating some of life’s most difficult journeys.

For families, volunteers offer reassurance and relief—whether that’s providing a short break, a listening ear, or a steady presence during uncertain times. For clients, they offer dignity, companionship, and the reminder that they are not alone.

Volunteers also support our team in countless behind-the-scenes ways—helping ensure programs run smoothly, creating welcoming environments, and strengthening the sense of community that surrounds hospice care.

Their impact is felt in every conversation, every quiet moment, and every act of kindness.

Because care isn’t only about treatment—it’s about connection, dignity, and being seen, heard, and valued.

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the individuals who give their time so generously and remind us that sometimes, the most powerful care comes simply from being there. 💙

Behind Every Strong Organization is a Dedicated Board 💙

During National Volunteer Week, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank our incredible Board of Directors.

Often working behind the scenes, our board members play a vital role in guiding the direction of Hospice Orillia. Through their leadership, insight, and commitment, they help ensure we can continue providing compassionate care to individuals and families in our community.

We are proud to recognize:

Bruce Bound, CPA, CA, Board Chair
Deborah Duncan-Randal, Vice-Chair
Quentin Evans, Treasurer
Tracey Rynard, B.A., J.D., Secretary
Pat Hehn, Director
Nicole Johnstone, Director
Madelyn Lye, RN, Director
Sue Martin, RN, CHPCN(C), Director

They are decision-makers, advocates, and champions for hospice care—giving their time, sharing their expertise, and helping us grow in meaningful and sustainable ways. Their work may not always be visible, but its impact is felt in everything we do.

We are deeply grateful for their dedication, their leadership, and their belief in the importance of hospice care.

Because of you, we are able to continue supporting our community with compassion, dignity, and heart.

Thank you for all that you do. 💙

Myth vs. Fact Friday – Stress Awareness Edition

MYTH: “Once the stressful situation is over, stress goes away immediately.”
FACT: Even after the stressor ends, your body can stay in “fight or flight” mode. It takes time and intentional calm‑down practices—like slow breathing, stretching, journaling, or a quiet walk—to help your mind and body fully reset.

💡 Try this: Pause for two minutes today to take five deep breaths or step outside for fresh air. Small moments of calm add up!

Let’s break the stigma around stress—it’s normal to need time to recover. Be gentle with yourself, and remember that simple self‑care steps can make a big difference.
