In 1952, inside a New York City delivery room, a baby was born blue and silent. Doctors hesitated, unsure whether to keep trying. Then a calm voice broke through the panic.
“Let’s score the baby,” said Dr. Virginia Apgar.

That moment changed medicine forever.

Apgar had once dreamed of being a surgeon, but in the 1940s few women were allowed into the operating room. Told that no hospital would hire her, she turned to anesthesiology instead — a decision that would save millions of lives.

Working in Columbia-Presbyterian’s maternity ward, she saw newborns die within minutes of birth because doctors had no system to judge which babies needed help first. So one morning in 1952, she grabbed a pen and paper and designed a five-point test measuring heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, reflex response, and skin color. She called it the Apgar Score.

The idea spread faster than anyone expected. Within a decade, almost every hospital in America was using it. Infant mortality fell sharply. Doctors finally had a language for newborn care — and babies once thought lost were suddenly being saved.

Apgar never stopped pushing forward. She earned a public health degree, joined the March of Dimes, and became a global voice for mothers and infants. When asked how she had thrived in a man’s world, she laughed, “Women are like tea bags — they don’t know how strong they are until they’re in hot water.”

Dr. Virginia Apgar passed away in 1974, but her test still guides every delivery room on Earth. Every two seconds, somewhere in the world, a baby takes its first breath — and someone quietly calls out a number that honors the woman who refused to give up on newborns or on herself.

Gentle hands. Strong evidence.
A new study in Frontiers in Pediatrics (2025) shows that children receiving osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) after appendectomy recovered faster, experienced less pain, and left the hospital almost 3 days earlier than those with standard care.

OMT isn’t about “alternative” medicine — it’s about aligning structure, physiology, and experience to support the body’s innate capacity for healing. 🌿

This is the kind of research and dialogue shaping the future of osteopathy — and it’s exactly what we’ll explore at the

The brain directly influences the gut microbiome. And a new study shows it can change gut bacteria in just 2 hours.

In a surprising twist to the gut-brain connection, scientists have now shown that the brain can change the gut microbiome—and fast.

A new study in mice found that brain signals could alter the composition of gut bacteria within just two hours. This adds strong support to the idea that communication between the gut and brain is bidirectional, not just microbes affecting mood and cognition, but brain activity shaping the microbial ecosystem as well.

While researchers have long known that gut microbes can influence brain function and mental health, this study is one of the first to demonstrate that the brain can send rapid signals that reshape the microbiome.

The discovery could have major implications for understanding how stress, emotions, or neurological conditions might directly impact gut health. It also opens the door to new therapeutic strategies that target brain pathways to influence digestion, immunity, and overall wellness.

A summary of A.T. Still's fundamental concepts of osteopathy (Seffinger et al., 2011, p. 3):
Health
• Health is a natural state of harmony.
• The human body is a perfect machine created for health and activity.
• A healthy state exists as long as there is normal flow of body fluids and nerve activity.
Disease
• Disease is an effect of underlying, often multifactorial causes.
• Illness is often caused by mechanical impediments to normal flow of body fluids and nerve activity.
• Environmental, social, mental, and behavioral factors contribute to the etiology of disease and illness.
Patient Care
• The human body provides all the chemicals necessary for the needs of its tissues and organs.
• Removal of mechanical impediments allows optimal body fluid flow, nerve function, and restoration of health.
• Environmental, cultural, social, mental, and behavioral factors need to be addressed as part of any management plan.
• Any management plan should realistically meet the needs of the individual patient.
