✨ Community Learning in Action! ✨
This month, our preschool group enjoyed an exciting community experience as we walked together to the local arena to attend a minor hockey game! 🏒
This meaningful outing began in our classroom, where the children worked collaboratively to create posters to bring along. As they worked, they shared ideas, used symbols and drawings to communicate meaning, and showed pride in contributing to a shared group goal.
During our walk through the neighbourhood, the children demonstrated curiosity and awareness of their surroundings. They pointed out familiar community buildings such as stores and public spaces, making connections between their classroom learning and the world around them. Several children also noticed numbers on street signs and buildings, naming and identifying them along the way and supporting early number recognition.
We also talked about the weather during our walk. The children observed changes in the wind and temperature and discussed how weather can be unpredictable. They shared ideas about how to dress safely for different conditions and why it’s important to be prepared when spending time outdoors.
At the arena, the children were excited and fully engaged as they experienced a community sporting event together. They practiced listening, following safety expectations, and showing respect in a public space. This experience helped build a strong sense of belonging and allowed the children to see themselves as active members of their community.
✨ Why this experience matters: ✨
💜 Well-being: Walking together, discussing safety, and adapting to changing weather supported physical health and self-regulation.
🩷 Play & creativity: Making posters and talking about hockey encouraged creativity, imagination, and shared joy.
🧡 Communication & learning: Children expressed ideas through art and conversation, identified numbers in their environment, and expanded their vocabulary around community and weather.
💚 Community & responsibility: Exploring the neighbourhood and attending a local event helped foster cooperation, respect, and a sense of belonging.
✨Looking ahead ✨
We will continue exploring community spaces, building number recognition through environmental print, and learning more about weather through books, conversations, and outdoor play.
We are so proud of how engaged, curious, and respectful the children were throughout this experience! 💙
