Dear Ontarians,
You might be wondering what is all the fuss with psychology in Ontario this fall?
Well it is a long story with all kinds of twists and turns but the crux of it is that the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario voted to pass proposed changes to drastically lower training and accreditation standards for the profession of psychology and at the same time to remove or modify the safeguards that protect the public. Let me explain.
The proposed changes are a reduction of 75% of supervised clinical training hours. Yes, you read that correctly, 75%. These hours of supervised training are are painstaking for a reason. It is the kind of training where we practice assessment and therapy skills, we are observed by supervisors, given feedback, practice again, correct for mistakes and try again over and over until we demonstrate we have the skills needed to effectively help vulnerable individuals. Individuals who have complex mental health needs like PTSD, Substance Use, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Workplace Injury just to name some. Now if the above is bad enough at the same time the College is also drastically changing the licensing exams. There will be unlimited attempts to take the EPPP, the JEE is going to be like doing a boating licensing exam online, and the oral exam entirely removed.
So I ask you. Is this okay with you?
Ontario public, health care providers, mental health colleagues, teachers, first responders, private industry and the Public Service of Canada you still have an opportunity to vote NO on the proposed changes.
If these changes are passed we will go from one of the highest levels of training to one of the lowest.
Stand up and show your support for the public protection of Ontario.
Tomorrow, December 9 is the last opportunity to submit your feedback.
