My client drew this picture of me today… and moments like this are why I love being a therapist.

Working with children is more than a profession — it’s a privilege. To be seen through their eyes, to be trusted in their world, and to witness their courage in healing is something I never take for granted.

Grateful for the little hands that remind me why this work matters.

Here's a step-by-step guide to assist you in setting realistic, meaningful, and achievable goals for 2026!

1. Start with Self-Reflection
- Assess the Past Year: What were the successes, challenges, and missed opportunities?
- Identify Strengths and Areas for Growth: Understanding your capabilities, skills, and weaknesses helps in setting goals that are challenging yet attainable.

2. Set SMART Goals
- Specific: Goals should be clear and well-defined. Avoid vague objectives like "be healthier"—it’s better to say, "exercise 3 times a week" or "eat 5 servings of vegetables daily."
- Measurable: Ensure there’s a way to track progress. For example, "read 12 books in the year" gives you a clear metric.
- Achievable: Goals should be realistic and within reach. Breaking it down into smaller steps, like will read one chapter a day.
- Relevant: Align goals with their long-term aspirations. For example, if you want to advance in your career, a relevant goal might be "complete a certification in my field."
- Time-bound: Establish a timeline. A deadline creates urgency and focus.

3. Break Down Goals into Actionable Steps
- Create a Plan: break your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, for a fitness goal, the steps could include signing up for a gym, exercising with a friend, setting a schedule, and tracking progress.
- Set Milestones: Identify milestones (quarterly or monthly goals) to ensure steady progress. These milestones keep them motivated and allow for adjustments if needed.

4. Prioritize Goals
- Focus on the Most Important Goals: Prioritize your goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Discuss which goals will have the most significant impact on your life and focus on those first.
- Balance Personal, Professional, and Health Goals: Don’t neglect one area in favor of another. A healthy balance is crucial for long-term success.

5. Maintain Accountability
- Regular Check-ins: Schedule monthly or quarterly check-ins with someone who will hold you accountable to track progress and adjust as needed.
- Use Tools or Journals: Use apps, planners, or a journal to track daily/weekly progress. This can boost motivation and self-reflection.

6. Prepare for Challenges
- Anticipate Obstacles: Discuss potential challenges they may face and brainstorm strategies for overcoming them.
- Adapt and Adjust: Sometimes goals need to evolve. Be flexibility.

7. Celebrate Successes and Learn from Setbacks
- Acknowledge Achievements: Small wins are still wins! Encourage clients to celebrate progress, no matter how minor.
- Learn from Failure: If setbacks occur, see them as learning opportunities, not failures. This mindset helps build resilience.

Final Thoughts

The key is to make sure you feel empowered, not overwhelmed, by your goals. Keeping your goals specific, broken down, and measurable while accessing your ongoing support would help you succeed in 2026.
