January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honour and support firefighters while raising awareness about the serious health risks they face. In Canada, cancer is the leading cause of duty-related deaths among firefighters, accounting for more than 85 % of occupational fatalities, and firefighters have a significantly higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer compared to the general population.
Outlook-Rudy Fire and Rescue stands firmly with all firefighters and their fight against occupational cancer β advocating for early detection, better protective measures, research, and support for those affected and their families. Together, we honour their courage and work to reduce risks for the brave men and women who protect our communities.
