Ann Cotton, MSW, RSW

Ann Cotton, MSW, RSW I provide in-person psychotherapy sessions in Owen Sound and virtual sessions across Ontario. I work with individuals ages 12 and up.

I grew up on the beautiful Bruce Peninsula and completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario (now Western University). Several years later, I completed my Master of Social Work degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have extensive training and experience working with ages 4-82, in a variety of settings: in-home, community, school, outpatient/office, and partial residential. After living out of the country for many years, I have recently happily moved back to the area. I am excited to provide compassionate, person-centered, strengths-based psychotherapy services to the community. If you're looking for a therapist, I'd love to hear from you! You can contact me through this page or through my Psychology Today profile.

Happy Pride month to all far and wide!!!๐Ÿฅณ

To be honest, I feel a mix of joy as well as fear and grief for my LGBTQIA2S+ friends and family in America right now. They and their lives are under attack in many ways and it's heartbreaking and very concerning. I love you all and I will do better this month and beyond about educating myself and taking action on your behalf. xoxo

With St Patty's Day tomorrow, it seems very fitting that I'm feeling so lucky.
Yes, this work is very heavy at times, and it's also absolutely incredible to have the honour of imparting therapeutic wisdom to the resilient and inspiring people who walk into my office.

We humans are complex and we are also strong and courageous.

Breathe ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š

She sat at the back and they said she was
shy
She led from the front and they hated her
pride
They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance
They branded her loud then were shocked by her silence

When she shared no ambition, they said it was
sad
So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad
They told her theyโ€™d listen then covered their
ears
And gave her a hug whilst they laughed at her
fears

And she listened to all of it thinking she
should
Be the girl they told her to be best as she
could
But one day she asked what was best for
herself
Instead of trying to please everyone
else

So she walked to the forest and stood with the
trees
She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves
And she spoke to the willow, the elm and the
pine
And she told them what sheโ€™d been told time after time

She told them she felt she was never enough
She was either too little or far, far too much
Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak
Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek

Then she found a small clearing surrounded by
firs
And she stopped and she heard what the trees said to her
And she sat there for hours not wanting to
leave
For the forest said nothing, it just let her

breathe

I'm honoured to be participating in a whole day training today on Polyvagal Theory-Informed Trauma Treatment, through my Grad School Alma Mater, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
We're only part way through the training and it has already been life changing for me.
I can't wait to bring this newfound knowledge and wisdom of the Science of Safety to my clients!
