“Clear communication is foundational to high-quality care,” ~ Ann Ford, President and CEO, Brightshores.

Brightshores is introducing PatientCompanion, an app that replaces the traditional one button call bell. This technology supports patients to communicate with their nursing team and help nurses respond to the most urgent needs first.

The project was supported by the CAN Health Network and led at Brightshores by its Office of Research and Innovation.

As we close out 2025, we're reflecting on the milestones that shaped our journey—and looking ahead to an exciting future.

One of the research highlights in 2025 was the launch of a new app at Brightshores that modernizes the traditional call bell system patients use to ask for help. When a patient needs urgent assistance, nurses can see the priority right away and respond faster. The app was piloted in two of our inpatient units.

This project reflects our commitment to leading rural healthcare research – ensuring that innovation translates into the highest quality care for the communities we serve across Grey Bruce.

We recognize Be A Donor month every April to raise awareness for the importance of organ and tissue donations and encourage people to register to donate. Organ and tissue donation is a powerful legacy that gives others another chance at life.

“It is incredibly meaningful for our team to work with patients and families knowing the lives that are changed by the generosity of donors,” said Dr. Kseniya Troyan, Brightshores Hospital Donation Physician. “I encourage people in our community to consider registering their consent to donate if they haven’t already. Organ and tissue donations save and enhance lives of countless people.”

Every year we welcome medical students to Brightshores Health System for Discovery Week through the Rural Ontario Medical Program. Medical students experience a day in the life of a local healthcare provider and see what that looks like in our unique rural area.

Education opportunities like this help to support recruitment and showcases the training and support Brightshores provides to help healthcare professionals thrive – ultimately building a strong future for the patients and families we serve.
